Not a scoop, though- it was on the BBC radio news over the weekend! (It
was in the Sunday Telegraph as well.)

He's clearly a moron. Religious people in positions of power are a
fascinating mix to me- usually highly intelligent, well-read, and with a
predilection for believing fairy tales.

Expressed the same way? Peregrine W goes one further on the same web site.

No, but the facts are pretty much the same

The story really speaks for itself I suppose.

The nice thing about Church of England bishops is:

1. They don't necessarily believe in God, although, unlike in the
'seventies, some sort of spiritual belief is normally required.

2. They add a moral dimension to the House of Lords which otherwise
wouldn't have one and so would otherwise be seen as a collection of
opportunist Tories.

3. They add a sense of the unreal to public life in the UK, something that
is much needed.

4. Every so often one of them stands up and condemns the government as a
bunch of immoral authoritarian opportunists, again, something that is much
needed.

No they don't. The only time that their votes are ever an issue is when
they vote against socially progressive policies, such as equalising the
age of consent, abolishing section 28, the civil partnership act, and
gay adoption.

Something which is very much ignored as well.

Since when did Ian Paisley ever attack anyone for being 'too
authoritarian'...

Most of the time the people involved in both houses of parliamnetthink that
waht they do really affects people's lives. It doesn't.

The bishops have no such illusions.

Well of course, they're C of E bishops...

They expect to be ignored...

You don't see the irony in Bishops telling other people for being
authoritarian?

No, it's not. The bishops are only 'noticed' in the Lords when they take
opportunistic positions _against_ progressive social policy. It's also
one of the few things they take fairly united positions against.

Of course they do- that's why they sit in an unelected house, in a
chamber that only rejects laws, but doesn't make them.

Of course I do,

But as they have no power and little influence it doesn't actually matter.

They're the entertainment.

They have the power to stop legislation- not as a group, but there have
been plenty of instances where, without the bishops, ammendments
wouldn't have gotten through.

> They're the entertainment.

You'll find them hilarious if ever they're making decisions that could
affect your life in a substantial way.
