On my first trip to Germany, I remember thinking that the government
should put therapeutic levels of Prozac into the public water supply.

That wouldn't be fair to the non-Germans who live there.

Well there must be some.

But I don't think I've ever met an official who was...

Or a hotel keeper come to think of it...

No? What did you do to upset them? I have always had very positive
experiences in Germany. The warmest, friendliest hospitality I have
experienced while travelling was in Bavaria.

I found them cheerful, friendly, and helpful on my last visit there.

But then maybe that was just in comparison with the Dutch.

That is my experience too. Younger Germans are just as good people
as any others.

Germans have been bashed for years by alla and sundry. I really think
it is time to judge them individually by the content of their
character, rather than just bundle them up as a bunch of Nazis. They
are not.

Most of them are actually very nice people.

I have only good things to say about them; I was showered with kindness wherever I went.
Clean streets, tidy gardens, flowers in every window... The patience of a thousand saints
with my terrible German... And their family home has to be the most cosy place on Earth!

I have met very few who were not nice, but then I speak their language,
which makes a difference. I don't speak any of the Scandinavian
languages, though, and I found the people in Denmark, Norway, Sweden,
and Iceland very nice people, too.

And then there's France. . .

The French get a bad rap, but almost all of them are very friendly to
tourists who respect them and their culture, even in Paris and even if
you don't speak French. I've been to France many times, most recently
in 2003, and I've never had bad experiences there. The same in
Germany - no one under the age of 80 there today could have had
anything to do with the Nazis, and the younger generations are totally
different people.

I've found nice people almost everywhere, even Athens . Some
cultures are more hospitable and more welcoming to visitors than other
cultures of course - what people may think is rudeness can be cultural
differences or language misunderstandings. In many poorer countries,
lots of people try to rip you off or keep trying to sell you things
you obviously don't want, which gets annoying, but it's a function of
poverty rather than culture, and when you are able to meet locals
socially in those countries they can be very different than the ones
who are hassling you 24-7 in the streets.

I have been to France and Germany three times. I had one waiter in France
who was a little snotty. In most cases the people I dealt with in stores,
restaurants, hotels and while travelling were very hospitable. I had very
pleasant dealings with people in Germany too.

It's a curious thing. When you approach people with a good attitude you
tend to be treated well. People who have problems in places like France
and Germany generally have problems most other places too.

Maybe I should clarify. We what the best hospitality in Garmsiche
Partenkirchen. My brother had been there a few years early and found
people in Fussen to be somewhat cold, but had had much better treatment in
G-P, and when we went there with him we found the people very pleasant to
deal with.
