Not Failed Diplomacy, Brilliant Diplomacy: Oppressed People Will Soon

March 19, 2003
This whole notion that the Bush administration diplomacy "failed" will
be shown as the exact opposite. "When Diplomacy Fails" was the title
of ABC's cynical special after Bush's Monday night speech. It's hard
to see history when you're in it, but Bush and Blair will be the ones
remembered by history. Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter will not -
despite what Walter Cronkite says.
The latest CNN poll shows so much support for Bush, and opposition for
the UN, that CNN barely covers it's own numbers. Tony Blair has more
and more backing among his people. The BBC reports: "[A]s war
approaches, the French cannot avoid the conclusion that their
diplomacy has failed." The French are going to be shown to be totally
irrelevant once again, as will the United Nations - not Bush or Blair.
The French are backtracking to get themselves involved, saying they'll
back us with their impotent military power if Saddam uses his chemical
or biological weapons.
What? I thought he didn't have any weapons and that this was "all
about oil." Far from being failed diplomacy, what Bush and Blair
pulled off is brilliant diplomacy. It illustrated who America's
friends are. Blair is the one liberal in the United Kingdom being
consistent, backing up the left's claims to care about the pain and
suffering of the Iraqi people. Blair and Bush understand that all
human beings seek freedom, and the same people who claimed democracy
wouldn't work in the Soviet sphere are just as wrong when they say
it's not for Muslims.
In no way is democracy an "imposition," which is why our strongest
allies outside the UK are these former Soviet bloc nations from
Eastern Europe. They don't take freedom for granted - not after 70
years of oppression. These people know a thug when they see a thug,
and these are the people about whom the left said after the Berlin
Wall came down, "Freedom isn't for everybody." It didn't happen
overnight in this country, but good things seldom do. It can happen in
Iraq, too, and it will - just remove the dictator, and give them a
taste of freedom. That's the brilliant message of the Bush-Blair
diplomacy.

Milosevic was also a bad man and yet Clinton was able to pull together a
genuine coalition to depose him
Saddam is worse -- yet Bush and his administration was unable to create
a coalition -- what besides 'failed diplomacy' do you call that?

Two choices: "invincible stupidity" or "American arrogance" (I refuse
to accept that he represents the majority of Americans, so I'll opt fo
the former).

That said, Clinton didn't have to show Dad that he deserved his love as much as his little
brother, either. ;-))
