Hello everyone. I'm headed for Europe for the first time, and I'm =

It's a lot easier to just put your ATM card into a machine in Europe and =
take out Euros. You get a lot closer to the wholesale rate that way. =
But find out what your bank charges for forgeign ATM transactions first.

There's no particular reason to buy before you go (much easier and cheaper
to just use the ATM at the airport when you arrive - in many airports they
even have ATMs in the luggage collection area so you can cash up while
you're waiting for your bags).

If for some reason you do feel uncomfortable not holding Euros as your plane
touches down, just get 20 euros or so, in which case the exchange rate
doesn't matter.

You will get your best rate using an ATM in Europe. I wouldn't change
any money into Euros before the trip, or if that makes you nervous just
get enough to get you to your first hotel.

We've been to Europe eight times and we always just show up over there
with maybe $50-$100 worth of Euros or the local currency and then just
use the ATM's for cash and the credit card for everything else.
It's a lot better now than it used to be. With the advent of the Euro,
we just put the leftover Euros "in a jar" after one trip and haul them
out for the next if we are going to one of the Euro countries. Used to
be ALL countries were different. Budget your money so you come back with
about $50 worth of Euros and you're set up for next time without having
too much money not earning interest.

Why do you want them? Most airports have ATM machines, and a great many
people here have frequently pointed out that you get the best exchange
rate using them, rather than buying currency (or travelers checks)
before you leave home.
