Eurostar "chunnel" reservations

Hi all
I plan to be travelling from London->Paris in late August/Early
September and back from Paris->London in late December.
I can buy a 2nd class Youth return ticket for $296 (Aussie dollars...
about 160euro) before I leave.
A couple of questions:
* I have heard about being able to buy Chunnel tickets "on the day"
(often cheaper than reserving well ahead)... is this feasible in late
August/early September? I'd just like to be able to leave on the day
I want to, the particular time is not really important.
* If so, will these "on the day" tickets be cheaper than booking ahead
(ie less than 80euro each way)
Thanks
Luke

Luke,
There are 2 rail services linking the UK and France via the Channel Tunnel
(no one has ever really called it the Chunnel):
1. Eurostar
An express passenger train which serves London, Ashford, Calais, Lille,
Brussels and/or Paris. Journey time about 3 hours London-Paris. You can
buy a ticket on the day of travel, but you'll pay through the nose for the
privilege. Much better to book ahead by at least 14 days to take advantage
of APEX fares. You can book up to 90 days in advance and the easiest way is
via their website at www.eurostar.com
2. Eurotunnel
A vehicle shuttle serving Folkestone and Calais. You drive you vehicle onto
the train and sit in it for the duration of the crossing. Info/booking at
www.eurotunnel.com
Cheers
