I've not been to every bar in Barcelona (;-), but I very much doubt if there
is a brew-pub as you would recognise it (or even a pub for that matter)

I'm sure if you're bothering to read this, you have some interest in
beer, and most likely, European beer.
Since I'm planning on traveling to Spain soon, what could anyone
recommend to me? I've had many different kinds of European beer,
specifically the ones we get over in the US (ie Guiness, Bass,
Newcastle, Chimay and several other Belgian styles, Beck's, Heineken).
I'm sure you get the idea. Bonus points to anyone that can recommend
decent brew-pubs in Barcelona.
This isn't a wine thread, just a European beer thread.

Paddock Motard Bar. A biker's bar, but with some very good beer.

Although widely available, beer ("cerveza" in Spanish) doesn't seem to be
that big a deal in Spain. It's served cold and is more like Becks or
Heineken than the darker British/Irish/Belgian varieties. San Miguel is
one of the best brands.
Watch out for the "large" beers in some of the more touristy bars on the
Ramblas, where large seems to mean about a litre!

Becks is German. Heineken is from the Netherlands. In Spain, beers available
Nationwide include San Miguel and Cruzcampo, both of which are inexpensive
and very palatable.

Did some Googling -
http://beerme.com/breweries/es/index.shtml
http://worldofbeer.com/9708/barcelona.html
This site mentions an "artisan brewery" (No 18 on list) but the site
of the brewery itself is down.
http://membres.lycos.fr/ciuitre/spagna.htm
This site:
http://www.breweriesontheweb.com/
has a link to
http://www.damm.es/
and you might have better luck than me in getting the damn thing to
open.
Otherwise, I find bog-standard Spanish beers (San Miguel etc) to be OK
- not brilliant but OK - and often served ice-cold rather than just
chilled.

Spain is, of course, not really much of a beer-drinking country and most
of what you find won't come close to North-Central European standards.
There is at least one brewery, though, called 'Damm' (see any German
influence there? ) that makes a pretty nice brew ('Voll-Damm', or
a name something like that).
cheers,
Henry

Yep. Damm is the biggest Catalan brewery. Their two most famous products are
Voll-Damm, dark and high graduation, and Estrella, lighter in colour and
alcohol. Their black beer is called Bock Damm.
Other very common brands are San Miguel, Cruzcampo (I hate both), and Mahou
in its Classic and Five-Stars varieties (my choice is Mahou Classic).

As you can see from your replys, beer is spain is cheap and not very
exciting. The Damm beers are very difficult to find on draft but you will
have fun looking for them. they're available in the large grocery stores.
I'll pose the same question. I'll be in Portugal in a few weeks. Any
beers/beer bars to recommend in Lisbon and Porto? One can drink only so
much port.

Spanish beers are fine on a hot day, but its really a big wine
drinking country or a coffee and a brandy. If you want a wide range of
beers you need to be in Belgium or UK.

Indeed, Spanish beer is fine for a cooling drink, if we beer brewing
countries could have grown grapes, we would be drinking your wine,
hey, I do anyway, but we have to import it! :-)
