We had a very cheap holiday using mainly Best Western in California.

How does that work when the premis is in the 'corporate'
style?

I've just returned from a night in one (Lerum) which was
identical in virtually every way (inside and out) to two other
Ibii that I have so far stayed in in Sweden (two others were
completely different).

Part of the franchise is the style.

In the decor, sure.

But in the construction from a green field?
Does someone build a property having already bought into
the (in this case) Ibis franchise and comit for the life-time of
the building?
I would expect that they build a generic property that could
become part of whichever franchise seems appropriate.

I'm not trying to be akward here. I'm just not convinced
that anyone other than the franchise owner would build a
property this way and hence suggesting that such properties
are 'owned'.

Not sure that this helps in deciding if a particular chain
is owned or not as obviously there could be a mixture.

There is a mixture. In one French town there are two Mercure hotels
both owned by Aerospatiale with totally different styles.

I've only stayed in them in Germany, but the rooms were interchangeable

I didn't find the only one I've stayed in over here cheap except in
comparison to Oslo. 8-)

In 1992 Best Western was cheap in California.

I suppose that it all depends on your comparisons. In the US BW is
usually cheap compared to a downtown hotel say Marriott or Sofitel. If
you compare it to a low end motel like Motel 6 it is expensive.
