From eltonjohn.com:
On Saturday, September 3, 2005, Elton and the band are to play a free
concert in Rome, Italy - right in front of the most famous ancient
Roman monument, The Coliseum.
The concert will take place in the afternoon, in the Fori Imperiali in
Rome, just outside and beneath the Coliseum. It will be a free
concert, and tickets are not required. The concert will be produced by
Telecom Italia (Progetto Italia) in collaboration with the city of
Rome, and is promoted by D'Alessandro e Galli.
The Coliseum was built about 1920 years ago. It is considered an
architectural and engineering wonder, and remains as solid proof of
both the grandeur and the cruelty of the ancient Roman world. The
Coliseum was built as an arena for 'the games' - gladiatorial combat
between both people and animals. Since those ancient 'glorious' days
the building has had many functions including being a fortress and a
place of worship.

There will be tight security at the event. The Italians have been cordoning
off the Coliseum for a couple of weeks in response to the perceived threat
of Kamikaze Bombers.

Another important function it performed was as a quarry to support the
massive building projects which took place in the Renaissance. That is why
there isn't much of it left now.

Given that it is in Rome near the Colosseum, and FREE, and they say
afternoon, I would guess unless you get there the night before and
camp out it really doesn't matter what time it actually starts. If
you plan to show up at "showtime" you're likely to not see or hear
much.

I guess that means you have no clue as well.
Looking for a time here folks (that means a number in the answer) not an
opinion.

Why don't you contact the organisers and report back? It's pretty
obvious that nobody here knows.

It starts at 9pm, according to this official Rome city government site:
http://www.estateromana.comune.roma....asp?mode=m&id_
manifestazioni=5245
A number of other sites say it will last three hours.

Well, if you choose to ignore the good advice given you by
other posters, you probably DESERVE to miss the concert!
(Which you undoubtedly will, if you plan your arrival to
coordinate with the scheduled time.)
Personally, I don't perceive the attractions of an Elton
John concert, but since I realize I'm in a minority there, I
suggest you be guided by considerations of his popularity,
and how many people would be inclined to attend a free
concert by him.

For your information, I will be in the city for four days during the
time of the concert. The question asked (again) was the time. I already
new from other sites and posters that only a general time of "afternoon"
was given which is obviously quite vague, especially when the
information from Anonomous and the website listed said 9pm. Clearly by
most peoples standards ,this is not afternoon but evening.
Personally, I'm not interested in your attraction to Elton John or not
and I was trying to get an idea as to how crowded the area would be and
when. Not that I was necessarily going to attend.
I didn't realize such a simple question would be so confusing to some.
