I hate to say it, but Weatherspoons are probably the cheapest pubs I can think of in central london, various happy hour specials (and there are some nice ones!)
notwithstanding. I try to avoid chains, but Weatherspoons _are_ cheap and cheerful, though they get horrendously crowded at particular times- Friday evenings for example.

Whetherspoons also do a good range of basic British meals - fish & chips, steak & ale pie, chicken pie, salads, etc and also pasta and rice dishes, all for around £4- £6. They also used to do two for one specials after 2pm and in the evenings (not sure if they still do).

If you go to Whetherspoons then why not try one of the "guest ales" (look for the name in chalk on the pump) as they usually come from small breweries that brew interesting beers?

As a side note, US keyboards don't have a "£" sign, so quoting GBP prices isn't so easy. Tip: hold down the "Alt" key then type "156" on the side keypad (but NOT the keys along the top of the keyboard) and release the Alt key. £!

Not expensive? That may be difficult.. There's a nice Thai restaurant called
Mangosteen on Ganton Street. I think they had an OK lunch price.

There are many good sandwich shops around. I always buy a sandwich or two and eat
outdoors in some pleasant place and save my pounds for dinner.

Haven't been in London recently. (Going next spring that's why I'm reading this
thread.) But our general MO when traveling is to eat a bigger lunch and go light on
dinner. It's healthier and cheaper. On occasion, we save up for a special dinner at
a special restaurant.

Will this plan work in London?

I found Bella Pasta to be filling. I'd also go to Tesco & Sainsbury for sandwiches...
I even found the salmon on a roll at Harrod's not to be too pricy... but then I was
on holiday in London. So, my sense of inexpensive might have been off.

But so bad as to be almost inedible, and not cheap either, IMHO. No-brand backstreet
Italians are a better bet.

For supermarket sandwiches, Marks & Spencer is the best bet (though the two you
mentioned aren't too bad). Pret a Manger (now opening in New York, I hear) is a good
chain selling pre-made sandwiches, likewise Benjy's.

However, you often can't beat the independents. If you're in an area with lots of
office workers, just look for the longest queue at lunchtime.

Benjy's is a good bit cheaper than Pret a Manger and tastes like it. That is not to say Benjy's make bad sandwiches, I worked in London for 10 years and Benjy's was my sandwich shop of choice; their sandwiches are larger than most, and they also do hot snacks such as baked potatoes, soup and toasted sandwiches.

Can I just point out that Diane Johnston (whose attribution strangely was snipped)
got the spelling right the first time round?!!

Have a look at my website, URL below, where I've reviewed several pubs and
restaurants around town.

Websites such as Time Out's and Square Meal (linked from my links page) provide lists
of cheap restaurants to eat in. Many people in central London (both visitors and
workers) can eat cheaply at sandwich bars for around UKP3-4. There are lots of cheap
restaurants - Stockpot, Chelsea Kitchen, Pollo - where you can get a decent meal for
UKP10 or less.

Look out for Pedigree as well as beers from Brakspears (sp??) and Fullers, which runs
its own chain of pubs. The strength of the beer is usually expressed on the front of
the beer pump as per cent of alcohol and is commonly in the 3.5-4.5 range.

That'll be Melati.
