Eastern Europe
I'm hoping to travel to Eastern Europe from May 1st-19th May and was
wondering if anyone could offer me any advice on an itinerary. I've drawn up
a shortlist of five countries:Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and
Bulgaria. However, it's likely that I'll travel to just three of these at
the most. Does anyone suggest which ones?I'm in my late twenties and like
nice scenery, but I also like a little nightlife as well. I'll probably fly
into one country, then travel by train around the various places, until I
fly home from another country. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Slovenia is lovely. You have Alpine lakes and mountains in the north and
Adriatic coast in the south west.
The coastal area was ruled by the Venetians so has a very Italian flavour.
Ljubljana and Maribor still have the feel of typical Habsburg towns.

Lee: first thing, check your passport/visa situation. If you're a UK
national, you don't need a visa for any of the countries listed, according
to http://www.travel-guide.com/navigate/region/eur.asp which has some pretty
good and comprehensive information on general travel issues, country by
country.
I have little experience of the countries you mention but suggest you might
consider the Czech Republic as an alternative: cheap flights are available
from the UK on Easyjet, and it's a truly beautful place. Weather will be
good in May.
The Black Sea coast of Romania is pleasant, warm and has nice beaches, and
was very cheap when I was there a few years ago.
I'm sure others will have plenty to say... but I suggest you check out some
guidebooks (I've always found Rough Guides and Lonely Planet very good).

Re: Eastern Europe
The Czech Republic is my favourite in the former "Eastern Europe", but from
the countries you mentioned I could recommend the following (based on my own
visits):
Romania - a fascinating country for good or bad, also the cheapest of the
lot. Romanians are
good at languages compared to the others.
Bucegi montains - Sinaia or Busteni are good place to base yourself. This
area has some lovely montain scenery. Good train connections.
Maramures - very distint region bordering the Ukraine but out of the way for
most itinerarys. I've never had such a feeling of traveling back in time
anywhere in Europe.
Sighisoara - a great medieval town, not as "sanitised" and touristy as
western equivalents (Rothenburg, Assisi) or even old towns in the Czech R
(Telc, Cesky Krumlov). Good train connections.
Bulgaria - I had language problems, but enjoyed the stay otherwise.
Rila Montains - again some spectacular scenery a few hours south of Sofia
Veliko Tarnovo - the old capital of Bulgaria
Balchik - laid back Black Sea resort without the mass tourism of nearby
Aleban and Golden Sands
Slovakia -
The High Tatras - this is a relatively small (in area) montain range and you
get excellent views. Fairly developed.
Bardejov - attractive medieval town in the east of the country
Hungary -
the Danube bend north of Budapest
Budapest itself is worth a visit
Lake Balaton if you like beaches
I have no experience of Slovenia, plan to go there at the end of May. All
the countries mentioned are very
cheap but Hungary less so.
