This past winter was extremely dry in Italy, as well as rather warm. Usually there is a lot of snow melt that fills the rivers well into the summer, but that won't happen this year. Unless the summer is unusually rainy, some drought is inevitable. Most Italian rivers aren't suitable for cruising in any case. There is a mountain ridge the length of the country, with a short fall from the crest to the sea. Therefore except in the north, where rivers can meander for some distance, most rivers are narrow and many practically dry up by the end of summer. There are some short river cruises in the lower basin of the Po, but they are often off because of low water levels even in a normal year. -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup |

I think I'm right in saying that last summer was Manchester's warmest, or near to it. There was never any need for a/c in my flat, despite having floor to ceiling windows in almost every room, because it is well designed, and is cross-ventilated. Our flat in Boston is on the shore, and has cross-ventilation. Even with their hotter summers, there are only a few days a year where a/c is necessary. I don't understand why you're even bothering with this conversation, Mike. -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net (don't email yahoo address) usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

Try spending a summer in Houston, or even Chicago... Not everyone has a flat on the Boston shore with cross - ventilation...or a flat in Manchester with tall windows and cross - ventilation. I haven't seen the lower basin of the Po, but I didn't expect there to be any cruises there at all. Isn't it surrounded by flat, mainly agricultural land? Certainly the sections I've seen around Pavia are not pretty at all. -- --- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |
