Default Driving time from northern Portugal to Carcassonne?

I am pondering driving from northern Portugal to Carcassonne. I do not know
northern Spain, nor the Pyrenees, nor the region south of Carcassonne. Am I
mad to consider the drive, since I have no time to tarry en route for
sightseeing, or is this doable? I had considered flying from Lisbon to
Barcelona, but the one-way fare is exorbitant. If driving is feasible,
please suggest the fastest route. Clearly, northern Spain warrants visiting,
but I have no time on this trip. I would appreciate an email reply as well
as a posting here. Many thanks.

Harlan

Autoroute show Porto-Carcassone to be about 850 miles and 12 hours of
driving. I couldn't comment on the acuracy of this, but its a starting
point.

The route it chose was directly North out pof Portugal, then across to
Valladolid then up to Bilbao.

Driving tends to be slow up near the Pyrennees, I would suggest
taking the most southerly route available and then up near the
east coast

You could fly from Vigo to Barcelona on Iberian for as little as 29.45 euro.
That's for advance purchase, internet booking. See www.iberian.com

There are lots of route planning sites, such as www.viamichelin.com and
www.mappy.com. They all will let you make various choices as to the type of
route, etc.

My wife is the navigator on our team, I mentioned this journey
and she just shook her head!
do you aim to do it in a single drive?

HI
I've just made a trip like that about 1 month ago.

Main places to see in the Northern Spain that I recommend (just from
personal experience) are Oviedo, the Picos de Europa (Potes,
Covadonga), the seaside town of Comillas (already in Cantabria), not
to miss Santillana del Mar.

If you do not intent to drive in the mountain, you'll have a motorway
(no tolls) from the Portuguese border in Valenca (in Minho) till the
French border in Hendaye. You can to to Leon, Oviedo, Santander,
Bilbao, San Sebastian, Hendaye and then in France you can go to
Carcassone via Toulouse. Crossing the Pyrinees might be a nightmare if
you choose to take Andorra.
