Did you mention that Imperial Airways no longer operates from Croydon
Airport? :-)

Probably will stay out further and drive the last bit early - can't face
trying to find somewhere in London again - everywhere seems like crap (if
you can believe reviews about small room sizes, peeling wallpaper, tiny
showers/toilets etc) run by indifferent staff for a lot of money.
Fingers crossed for we we have booked ...

Aren't trains always packed?

The train journey from Croydon is short.

But can't you drop off the car at Ashford and pick up the Eurostar from
there ?
(Making an assumption about drop off ability at Ashford).

To the nearest microsecond?

I had a sundial once since my wife dropped it, it has been
consistently several hours slow.

Yes, about 30 - 35 minutes. Note, however, that:

(a) the Alamo depot at Croydon (Imperial Way) is about 2/3 of a mile
from the nearest station (Waddon), and 2 miles from the main station
(East Croydon).

(b) there are no direct trains from any Croydon station to Waterloo.
Suggested routes are either East Croydon to Clapham Junction and change
there for a train to Waterloo; or East Croydon to London Bridge and
change there for a train to Waterloo East, which adjoins the main
Waterloo station, inside which is Waterloo International.

There is no Alamo depot at Ashford. The nearest ones are at Maidstone
and Dover, each of them around 10 miles from Ashford.

According to the National Rail site and the british tourist office it is a
direct train...

Last time I crossed central London by car it took me two hours, and
that was outside rush hours.

Assuming you are dropping off to Edgeware rd (Hertz) then its quite
accessible even at that time of day.
It is on the edge of the Charge zone, but can be reached without going into
the charge zone.
Perhaps if you want to be close, there are literally hundreds of boutique
hotels in Paddington to Marble Arch & other Hyde Park areas.
Now making sure they can give you a car park over night might be the biggest
thing.
Can then walk back to hotel from Marble arch after returning vehicle by
getting hotel close.
