SWITZERLAND: POWER FAILURE SHUTS RAIL NETWORK The state rail network
ground to a halt for four hours because of an electric failure,
stranding hundreds of thousands of commuters during the evening rush
hour. People were left on platforms or stuck in carriages on a day when
temperatures soared to 90 degrees. "Trains are halted across the whole
network," Swiss Federal Railways said in a statement. The shutdown was
caused by a power failure at 5:45 p.m. local time on part of the track
in the southern Italian-speaking part of the country. The trains were
back running at 9:30 p.m. but with delays. The system normally runs like
clockwork, and the Swiss are among the world's most avid rail travelers.
Earlier this year, the state network introduced a timetable to help

This was the first nationwide breakdown, regional
power failures happened once in a while before.

Swiss Federal Railway website www.sbb.ch has some
information on that failure, but no english translation
yet (only in german, french and italian)

Even Swiss Federal Railway boss Benedikt Weibel was
stuck in a train near French border ..... .
