Deposit for Flat in Rome?
Hi all. I am looking to rent a flat for a month in Rome. It looks like
I have found one, but the company is asking for me to wire transfer a
significant deposit to an account in Italy. Is this common for renting
a place in Europe? I am only concerned because I have not met the
people with the company and I don't want some one to take off with my
money. I guess I want to know if I will end up having to do this or if
someone will take a deposit on a credit card or through an escrow
account?
TIA, Megan

it is customary to require a deposit -- we have never had trouble having
it returned -- but we always worry a little about it.

I did this in Venice. Upon my request, the company provided references. I
contacted them and the company was legitimate. The staff member I dealt with
was definitely sub-optimal, but all in all it was worth it. The flat was
great.
Good luck.

This is very usual. It helps if you know the rental agency is reliable.
Search old messages in this newsgroup or go to www.slowtrav.com for agency
recommendations. (By the way, I can recommend Cuendet.)
Here's a post from earlier this month. It gives a web site where you can do
a wire transfer, charging a credit card. I wonder if the credit card company
will help you out if the apartment doesn't live up to its description?

I've been living in Belgium since June, and have made several
transfers from my U.S. bank account using c2it, an online
money-transfer service from Citibank.
Of course the rates are lousy, but the transaction fee is only $10. It
takes about a week, or less if you transfer cash from a credit card
