Default Danube River cruise

We're going on a Budapest - Prague cruise with three days in each of these
cities. I'm looking for some clarification of money issues.

1.What currencies are used in Hungary and the CR now that they are in
the EU?
2.What currencies will ATM's dispense?
3. If the currency is local, what's the best way to exchange for Euros
at the end?

TIA

There is no Danube in Prague or nearby!

Forint and Czech Crowns.

see above.

Re Hungary, they still use forints. The conversion rate is about 240
or 250 forints to the Euro as of a month or so ago. That's what you
get from currency conversion places of which there are plenty in the
touristed areas and also from ATMs. I have more trouble finding a bank
machine that accepts my local bank card here in Belgium than I did in
converting and obtaining forints in Budapest.

And at the end of the trip you change it back at a bank or currency
exchange facility at the airport, hotel, train station, or wherever.
Not a big problem.

Enjoy your trip, Budapest is lovely,

cheers

Hungary: Forints; Czech Republic: Korunas (crowns)

Same answer.

Best not to have to change back -- you are unlikely to get a good
deal. Budget with a little care, and use the last bit either to buy
little presents or give to charity.

Being part of the EU and using the euro are two entirely different
things. Hungary and the Czech Republic still use their native
currency, Forint and Koruna, respectively. Some places will
accept euros, but I wouldn't count on it.

    > 2.What currencies will ATM's dispense?

ATMs *everywhere* only dispense the local currency.

I was just in Budapest and I was pleasantly surprised by the city
and the people. Great city.

That's not true. I certainly was able to withdraw US dollars from ATMs
in Cairo (not in Europe, I know.) I thought I'd read about some machines
in non-Euro countries dispensing Euros.

I've seen it in Nassau in the Bahamas, too. US Dollars from ATMs. Note there
was a separate ATM for US Dollars and Bahamian dollars.

The ones in Egypt I saw offered either US Dollars or local Pounds from
the same ATM.

That's pretty cool. But I'll point out, to get back to the original point, that
I've NEVER seen it in Europe.

the danube is not flowing through Prague
but through Regensburg Passau Linz Vienna Bratislava Budapest and so
on..until it flows into the black sea.

the river in Prague is Vltava.. in english Moldava
that flows into the river Elba ( Labe in Czech.. )
last czech town where the river flows is Usti Nad Labem..

By the way.. Smetana composed the Moldava symphony, part of which is now th
Czech National Anthem..

Oh, all right, then: there is an ATM in Dublin Airport (departures
area) which dispenses sterling. But such facilities are quite rare in
Europe.

Both in the czech republic and in hungary you will have a lot of exchange
offices offering to buy and selling notes of the most common currencies.
pls note that both the czech crown and the hungarian forint are not pegged
to the eur..
so the exchange rate may vary from day to day
outside the two countries. it would be difficult to exchange the two
currencies.
at least you will suffer great lossess

I wonder if there wouldn't be more demand for them now- especially as
the Euro is so widespread. You can use Euro coins in London phone
booths!

Major airports like Frankfurt will exchange just about any European
currency, with a rate favorable to them, of course.

The easiest thing to do if you are paying your hotel bill or last meal with
a credit card is to use your leftover cash (particularly coins) as part
payment and put the rest on the card. I never had a place refuse to do the
split thing and it helps get rid of local currency before moving on.
