Almost every school pupil learns French in the UK. I myself speak it
almost as well as I speak my own language. Only Americans are
non-linguists, accepting incredibly low standards as " credits."
I have visited many schools in the USA to view language classes.

It is an irony of the love-hate relationship between the British and
French. The French have the health system the Brits wish they had, the
transport systems, the countryside, the lifestyle, etc. They are happy
to cross the channel to enjoy all that, but can't create it at home.
Anyway, fortunately France is big enough that one can avoid those
English enclaves!

arrive at Waterloo station :-)
Anybody know the fare from Golders Green to Finchley Central on the
northern line?

Another continent???
I think the point you're missing is just how close northeastern France and
southeastern England are. It's just as viable a weekly commute as living
in (many parts of) rural England and going into London for the working
week.

Another continent???
I think the point you're missing is just how close northeastern France and
southeastern England are. It's just as viable a weekly commute as living
in (many parts of) rural England and going into London for the working
week.
