I have a friend whose 19th birthday was on 11 Sept. 2001. He didn't deserve it either.

You should have told us anyway, we would have started the celebrations three days too
early... ;))

I aam like the fellow who was asked how it felt to be ridden out of town on
a rail? "If it wasn't for the honor of the thing, I'd just as soon have
walked," he replied.

Yeah but the French prefer dubbed over subtitles don't they?

I remember seeing Seinfeld dubbed.

Yes. Most French people make little effort to learn foreign languages,
although they aren't as bad as Anglophones.

Recent English language films in Paris are both in spoken English + French
subtitles or, at other theaters, in dubbed French. Why the popularity of
spoken English among the French?? I am not sure.

A few blocks from us were have a film rental store which rents only English
films, and if on tape require a non-standard VCR, multistandard. These
are standardly sold in Paris, we have a TV with on build in. The films
are not subtitled.

So there must be a market for this sort of thing supply English language
services to the French, not merely foreigners in residence.

LOL

A prat fall in any language is pretty similar.

Whatever happened to that nice Oz girl, who used to play the zither
and sing to Norman? Shirley Abicair???

There are many foreigners in Paris, most of whom speak English, if they
don't speak French.

I dunno. There are a _lot_ of English-speaking foreigners in Paris.

My daughter is studying acting in college and recently completed a
dialects course in which she learned to deconstruct, document and then
perform various accents. One of the dialects they worked on she regularly
refers to a "Pepe Le Pew" french.

Funny. I think they are good choices for the roles. But
I also thought the characters look different then these
two actors. I though Sophie was a red-head. And I
definitely pictured the detective as short & fat and
with a silly moustache!

The author has done this often in his books. In another
book, he had Langdon drive through a park that is closed
to vehicles. His translations are really terrible. In
Angels & Demons he wrote in a few phrases in Spanish
instead of Italian. And one phrase I still can't find a
translation for.

Anyway, I read three of his books. I found them amusing
but I'm glad I was able to borrow them. Not sure I'd
have been too happy had a payed money for them.

The movie WAS dreadful! Can't speak of the book. The
DaVinci Code was an amusing book. I'm sure the movie
will be much better than "Le Divorce". Although not set
in Paris, I enjoyed "The Chateau" (dir. Jesse Peretz).
Very funny, if a bit odd-ball.

Well, I wouldn't deny my idea came from some stereo
typical French detective. Could have been Pirot (sp?)
but definately not the french detective from Jersey or
Guernsey... what was that show again? He was blond and
when I was young I though he was quite good looking.

Poirot - Belgian

Bergerac currently being shown on Belgian TV in the afternoon.

John Nettles, now middle aged and star of Midsommer Murders.
