Subtitles come in handy if one's hearing is poor. I go in Friday to get
a hearing aid, and begin a period of adaptation to using it.
Even in some American films I look the French subtitles since I
am not quite sure what they said in English.
I feel disconcerted when a film has several nationalities speaking
and they all are speaking "French", mostly dubbed. The authenticity
of a war film is higher if the Germans are speaking Germans, the French
French and the English speakers English.
My wife once worked on a film in which they doing the subtitle script.
It is not easy since they have limited space to work in so they have
to contract the spoken language and get the point across. Next
is having a person who know both language well so that the right
word is selected for the script.

France is the most popular tourist destination in the world, and Paris
is the most popular destination city for tourists. France is also the
country for which people search most often on Google, oddly enough.

Set in, perhaps, but not filmed in. For example, the film _Moulin
Rouge_ was shot entirely in Australia--it never came anywhere close to
France.

I expect everyone to speak English, as per Hollywood norms. French
people in the film will simply speak English with a French accent.
Minor characters and/or unimportant dialog may actually be in French to
add color, though.
I'm curious as to how well Audrey Tautou can speak English, if she is
indeed playing Sophie Neveu.

voice.

They are usually coached so well with their lines that really speaking the
language is not important.
The best way to learn another language is with a lover. Yves Montand
practiced his English with Marilyn Monroe, much to the dismay of
Simone. The lessons were temporary and he drifted back home.
Now if Audrey needs English lessons, I know this 73 yr old American who
is willing to tutor.

The day that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt gave
a stiring speech about the attack, asking for a declaration of
war.
It began---
"Yesterday, December 7,1941 - a date which will live in infamy -- The United
States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the
Empire of Japan."
It was my 10th birthday, since then I have had to share it.

After 50 showings.
Benny Hill with Dutch subtitles took some beating. The guy doing the
subtitles substituted his own jokes, sometimes better than the
original usually worse.
