Until recently, the Americans rarely complained about the French. The
wannabe part was certainly true. A French accent was very useful for
selling products, especially luxury products. Actually, I think the
complaints are dying out again. At least my New York informant says
so. He used to make a point of walking out of restaurants that offered
"freedom fries", complaining all the while that he hated being put in
the position of having to defend the French. (He's Italian.) He says
that now he never sees freedom fries anymore.

You could say the same thing of Americans themselves - they want to be
rugged frontier individualists, but they do so from in front of their
TV sets eating a microwave meal from a tray.

Does that describe Chirac? Sounds more like Ariel Sharon!

Does French tourism depend on American movies?

Despite the cool relations between France and the US, I thought France
still remained a top destination, even to Americans?

Anyways, there are plenty of American movies set in France all the time,
aren't they? Just saw the DVD of "Le Divorce" on sale. Suppose to be a
dreadful movie but it's based on a novel by a writer who is supposedly a
big Parisphile.

An old French saying is "toujours plus"

The writer of Le Divorce describes a social class we are not nor do we know
anybody here in France who is. But then they would live in the 16th or
Neuilly and we live in the 6th!

Curiously the key academic of the De Vinci Code also does not speak French.
Most American academics who specialize in something like art history would
probably speak some French, however. While the key French characters in the
film will speak English in the film I am wondering what they will do with
the run of the mill French people also in the film. I would prefer French
with a few English subtitles to give it authenticity.

I hate dubbed films. I much prefer the alternative - original sound
track with subtitles.

"Novecento" was not dubbed, the italian actors were speaking English. It made me cringe
for two hours.

French TV have them all the time. I am now use to John Wayne speaking
French! Naturally they used a deep throated French voice, not squeeky.

All German films used to be dubbed by a tiny team in Berlin.

On TV 5 they sometimes show films/programs with foreign language
subtitles, but never with English subtitles.
