The first statement isn't really true. I haven't met or seen too many
Americans who want to be like the French. They may wish to imitate or
emulate some aspects of French culture, but they don't want to be
French. Rather like the attitude that mainstream American culture has
towards blacks.

The crowds in Starbucks and McDonald's; the American songs on the radio;
the American television programs on TV. The constant influx of English
words into the language. Other things.

Chirac has said specifically that he wants to be a "counter-weight" to
the U.S.... meaning equal. Who else, or at least allies, has made such
comments ?

What he may be saying, indirectly, is that the French people whom he
meets are aware that he is a USAian and that they wannabe more like him.

Do you find that plausible?

Not really. Particularly if he walked up to me in the Louvre wearing
shorts and hiking boots, chomping on a big Mac and gurgling on grape
soda. But I may be wrong because I don't know what "cognitive dissonance"
means.

That describes what I think the attitude of the French to Americans is:
they wish, for example, to wear symbols of an American image of
individualism, but they have no real desire to become obese morons
governed by a Bible-thumping cretin.

Seems rather a leap of logic, to suppose that wishing to drink a large
cup of coffee indicates that you want to be a permanent resident of a
La-Z-Boy armchair?

You probably wouldn't recognise it, if it struck you in the face :-)

Most French people don't know anything about armchairs. Their
understanding of America and Americans comes from television and motion
pictures. And that's what fascinates them.

They might not want to be the way Americans really are, but the vast
majority of them have no idea how Americans really are.

So instead they want to be Bible-hating cretins governed by an obese moron.
