Default Croatia - how to get there cheaply and where to visit

Hi

I'm thinking of going to Croatia (islands) in a couple of weeks time, and am trying
to find the cheapest way to do it. Flights to Dubrovnik, Split and Pula all seem to
be very expensive (scheduled ones over £1000....) - where's the best alternative
place to fly to or what are the best cheap travel places to contact to get a more
reasonably priced flight. Have searched the internet all morning but can't find
anything cheap for the last two weeks of August when I've got to go.

Once there, hope to go around some of he islands - which are the least spoilt? Not
going for a mad time socially, just want something beautiful and peaceful with good
beaches and good snorkelling.

Thanks for the help!

Harry

If you've got time on your hands, Go will get you to Venice for £87, and then you can
get a train to Croatia - it's a lot cheaper than £1000, but it will take all day...

It might be quicker and cheaper to fly to Trieste with Ryanair, and then travel from
there. I've never done it, but that's the route a friend of mine takes.

Hi Harry,

Have been to Croatia many many times, usually driving from UK, but also have flown
using Adria to Ljubljana and Croatia to Split then boat to Brac. You don't say where
you will be flying from but if it's from the UK the £1000 strikes me as amazingly
dear!!! I know that flights to Split are to be found for about £260 return as I
checked it out end of July...with Adria I seem to remember..... In the end changed
plans and flew Malev to Tirana (£300 return high season) and spent two amazing weeks
in Albania instead. Rona

1000 GBP seems quite expensive to me. If you fly from UK, you can go to Ljubljana
from London (return ticket approx. 350 EUR) and then take a flight Ljubljana-Split
(return ticket approx. 220 EUR). Alltogether around 500 GBP. Check
http://www.adria.si/ for timetables for direct flights London-Ljubljana and
Ljubljana-Split.

Flights for August may already be full though.

Another possibility is to go to Zagreb and then either take a flight to Dubrovnik or
train to Split. See http://www.croatiaairlines.hr/.

Maybe Lastovo? http://www.lastovo.net/, also search Google for other sites providing
information about it.

Yes, I heard that you can fly from London (Stanstead) to Trieste for only 25 euro
with Ryanair.

From Trieste you can take a train/bus to RIJEKA, and from Rijeka ferry to SPLIT or
DUBROVNIK, from where you can catch local ferries to the islands. I think train is
better, but you have to check that. Just make sure that you arrive to Rijeka before 5
pm, because the ferries usually leave around 6 pm (at least they were when I went
from Rijeka to Split). You will wake up around 7 am in Split, and from there you can
take another ferry to the island of your choice.

As for the islands, I strongly recommend KORCULA ISLAND - the town of KORCULA is
beautiful and has a nice location (close to the coast, close both to Split and
Dubrovnik), and from there you can visit little towns in the countryside like
SMOKVICA... There are some wonderful unspoiled beaches - the best are there where you
see cars parked by the road - people leave it there and hike down to the beaches.
Snorkelling is fantastic everywhere on the Croatian side of Adriatic, so you will
have no problem.

Have fun in Croatia (once you get there you will see that it isn't so
expensive). Elly

Hi again - thanks for all the info.

Managed to find a cheapish flight to Pula in the north in the end - slightly more
expensive than the ryanair route, but much less time consuming and there was only
about £10 in it... so will be arriving there at Lunchtime on 20th Aug for 2 weeks.

I've been looking at the islands in the north - does anyone know if you can get a
ferry from Pula to Rab? That sounds like a lovely island. Also, what are Cres,
Losinj and Krk like? Again, do ferries go from Pula? Maybe we'd be better off going
to the more southerly islands?
