My first visit to Hawaii, in 1947, preceded my second by forty years.
The vivid images in me 'ead were extremely accurate! So were my
images of Grand and Bryce canyons, Crater Lake, Oregon Caves, the
parts of Mexico I revisited on my own, and many other places I first
visited before I was fourteen.

As I "blame" m'mother's fine cooking for my enormous appetite,
healthful diet, and ability to eat almost anything I'm served, I
"blame" my father for making a traveller of me.

Well, *I* would be whining "are we there yet!" if I
weren't trying to be the grownup on many trips ;-) I don't
particularly enjoy the getting there most of the time. But
once the flight/drive/whatever is accomplished, it's mostly
fun from there on out, and the kids seem to feel the same.
I'm sure there are kids who are dragged on travel with no
consideration for their interests, needs and abilities, and
there are obviously spoiled kids who'll whine if they're not
getting their way every second, but there are also lots of
families where the kids learn to be decent travel companions
and enjoy the process--even young children.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Don't the kids enjoy the flight? I don't remember not enjoying flights
until I was an adult, and even then, it has to be pretty grim (i.e.
really long flight) for me not to enjoy it!

My older two (8 and 10) are fine with flights. My
toddler isn't always thrilled with being immobilized for
so long (neither am I, for that matter ;-) We all cope,
though. The only times we're likely to have a sticky
situation is when flights get delayed or canceled and
what used to be a good itinerary becomes one that gets
in the way of getting needed sleep (or food, but I always
come loaded for bear in the food department--*NEVER* travel
with hungry kids! ;-)

Best wishes,
Ericka

I've been revisiting places that I first went to when I was 10 or 12 -
like London and New Orleans. My first visit meant that my second
visit some 54 years later could concentrate on either revisiting the
things I enjoyed the first time to show them to my husband, or seeing
things that I missed the first time.

I didn't have to do the whole touristic visit to the Mdme. Tussaud's
and the Tower again if I didn't want to (which I didn't) and could
instead go to the British Museum and the Savoy theatre for a
performance of G&S.

Our kids did, they enjoyed the long flights much more than me. They
had twice as much leg room for a start :-)

Not to mention the service on our favourite Dutch airline :-)

My son is a pretty good road-trip travellor. He gets a kick out of helping
choose restaurant and motel stops. Even did when he was five or six.

He keeps a hawk eye out for any and every thing we're taking along with us, too.

Kids can be really vested into the process.

Oh, that's probably another factor in my enjoyment. Being short has
advantages when flying in economy!

If you would like to consider Panama, which is next to Costa Rica and just
as interesting then take a look at
my webpages which have been online for the past 10 years:

http://www.FocusOnPanama.com/ or
http://www.coralys.com/panama/

There you will find a lot of information for the (potential) tourists, most
of it first hand information and better yet, up to date!

Emilio

I hated flying from the time I was a kid. It is the most boring thing
on the planet. Children in general are not meant for sitting for long
periods of time (neither am I actually)
