Yeah. Always loved the rustic look of it in the films so Im thinking
about spending a couple of days there. Doesnt seem to be much in the
way of accommodation though and also Id like to hear about accessing
it with public transport.

I think the Sicily bits were filmed in Forza d'Agrò in the province of
Messina.

There's an adorable little shepherd's cabin, whose latest occupant is
now a guest of the state.

So they were. Good catch. Looks like it could work out a bit better on
the old transport front, although I did rather like the idea of
traveling to the centre of the country. Thanks.

I've been to backwoods Sicily, not far from there and I'd seriously suggest just taking a cab over there. I was able to negotiate something like 30 Euro to do it.
The buses do go out there (I haven't checked the schedule, but they are for every city) somewhere in the range of 2-3 times a day, tops. Maybe even only once a day. Maybe not even on Sundays.
Also, there may only be what was suggested in terms of accommodation. My family comes from a place a town north and there's only one B&B in it's proximity.
For the photos I've seen, I don't think any of the godfather was filmed there. Not that it isn't a neat place to visit, and it IS where Pacino's family came from, but it's just a small Sicilian Village with a past history of crime issues, when it really comes down to it (which is still great to visit, but not to get your hopes up for more than it is).
