Default cheapest european gateway from NYC

Hi all, I might have to go to Spain in August, and of course it will be
high season, so prices will be max...anyway, I am thinking of making a
mini vacation and flying to whatever then getting over to Spain for the
event...

anyway, which european city is usually cheapest to fly to from NYC
(either JFK or EWR)...like I said, I don't mind travelling around (that
will actually be the fun part) once I am there....

thanks for any and all advice

Well I know of people who have flown from NYC to Ireland via
Frankfurt to save money, so maybe Frankfurt is a good candidate.

London is almost always the cheapest European city to fly into.

There are sometimes cheap fares to Paris, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. In
high season, those tend to be considerably more expensive than London,
but you still might find some decent fares.

Icelandair often has very cheap flights from the US to European cities
if you don't mind a stopover in Reykjavik.

Non-hub cities like Berlin, Barcelona, and Prague are typically much
more expensive to fly into in high season.

...add Malaga, Spain as a cheap hub possibility too when you search
prices!

Hub? Do you understand the word?

I observe via search engines and other sources that many "cheap" flights
both arrive and depart from there; one flight I searched out on price
and recently booked too; therefore why I posted a reply. I don't know
if any airlines consider this city their 'operating hub'; but I may
truthfully call it a hub of cheap airfare as I did.

Thank you for roundabout noting this distinction for the OP's perusal.

There are a lot of budget airlines that fly there, but it isn't a cheap
gateway to NYC. I don't even think there are flights from Malaga to NYC,
are there?

Since folks in this group insist that Iceland is in Europe it is without
a doubt the cheapest gateway city. Unfortunately the ongoing costs will
be significant.

It's usually cheaper to fly to Europe with a stopover in Reykjavik than
it is to fly just to Reykjavik.

Since you're not getting any real answers (from the posts I've seen), I'll
share my limited knowledge: I usually find the fares to London & Brussels
are much lower than Paris & Amsterdam. Haven't really priced much else.
London also has cheap fares with Ryanair, BMI, etc, so it could make a
lower-priced stopoff from an airfare perspective. Of course, London is
also quite expensive for things besides airfare.

Airhitch.org lists a Thursday voucher available from NYC to Malaga; but
I can't assume it's a direct flight without details; those 'details'
take a purchase to see...<g>... Malaga/NYC return on Thursday also
listed.

A search on cheapair.com does not show a direct flight NYC to Malaga;
many options NYC/Paris,Madrid,Zurich,etc/Malaga... You appear to be spot
on David! Philadelphia does have direct USAir flights there and back;
I'm on a return myself.

Is the USAir flight really direct? I think you'll find you change in
Madrid (where USAir do fly to.)

Your point falls pretty flat, actually. Icelandair has long marketed
itself as a European gateway, and a high proportion of the US-Iceland
flights are with passengers flying onwards to mainland Europe.

Aarrg, David... What was I thinking??? My return is
Malaga/Barcelona/Philly/Cleve...

It was over $100 more for Barcelona/Philly/Cleve on the same carrier and
flight numbers without the Malaga leg! Screwy route prices...
