The last I checked, a bed at the Hyde Park Inn will cost you from £10.50 to £29.00
per day depending on what room type you prefer. Prices include a Continental
Breakfast. The place is generally clean, although it can be loud, depending on the
type of clientel staying there.
Near Hyde Park and Paddington station there are a number of places that rent starting
at about £25 single with shared bathroom. Most of those located around the area are
clean and well maintained. Like the Hyde Park Inn, they will run a bit more cost than
some of the less expensive places but at least they cater to a more respectable
tourist. And you won't be hit up for spare change everytime you walk through the
place to your room.
About a year ago I stayed at YHA St Pancras. In a room with en suite. The Hostle is
very close to the Kings Cross/St Pancras stations - railway, tube, buses - from where
you can reach anyplace in London. The area around the Hostle was better than it was
when I was there in '97; guess the beggars must have moved elsewhere. The Hostel
itself was very clean, quiet, and included the best breakfast I have ever had in any
Hostle. The breakfast by itself it will keep you going until dinner time. The London
YHA Hostels will not be as inexpensive as those which are private or non-affiliated.
But you get what you pay for. The YHA City of London Hostel is at a very good
location, adjacient to St. Pauls.
Another place would be Hughes Parry Hall Residence at Cartwright Gardens. Which is
not far from the St. Pancras YHA. Not a bad place but very busy and loud. For the few
£s difference I personally would go with St. Pancras.
And, depending on the timing of your trip, a room at one of the resident halls of the
London School of Economics may be worth investigating:

Avoid The Generator. Unless you are willing to accept the loud noise, and the lack of
clean facilities.

What about HYDE PARK COURT HOTEL in 48 Norfolk Square Westminster. Could you
recommend this one? I was considering staying there in early January 2003 -singles
from 34 pounds per night.

Hyde Park Court is at a good location. And £34.00 / day is particularly good by
London lodging standards. The single room is quite small. Although all rooms are en
suite with a small bathroom which contains a shower and toilet. And rooms on the
street side may be subject to some noise.
Early January is a good time to book if you are trying to save costs. Expect cool
temperatures and rain. But this is London, so there are few times when you cannot
expect this forecast.
