I don't know if this is *cheaper* - it's quite a long crossing (17.5 h) -
but there are ferries between Rosyth (in Fife, just across the Forth Road
Bridge from Edinburgh) and Zeebrugge, which would save driving up through
England (you'd have to drive up through Europe, where petrol is cheaper).

AFAIK the other ferries operating from continental Europe to the UK are

Brittany Ferries - St Malo, Caen, Cherbourg, Roscoff, Santander
Hoverspeed - Calais, Ostend, Dieppe
P & O Portsmouth - Le Havre, Cherbourg, Bilbao
P & O Stena - Calais
Seafrance Ferries - Calais

The cheapest ferry will be on the short crossing
across the straits of Dover. The exact deal will vary
but in general mid week crossings are cheaper

Try one of the one line pricing services

sorry but I found another way (IJmuiden Newcastle) with Scandinavian
ferry. Because I have to go in Glasgow, Scotland for 3 years! Do you
know others solutions of ferry companies?

I know there are a lot of italians there...
but Scots are similar to us!
