Castles of the Rhine

I am driving from Aachen to Frankfurt, leaving at 9am arriving about 5pm - I
would like to travel a scenic route, not motorway, beside the Rhine, with a
view of castles if possible.
I can't decide whether east or west side of river would be best. I intend to
visit this area again next year for a holiday, but would like to get just a
flavour of the area during this drive. Any information would be welcome and
road numbers would be useful. many thanks

B9 (left bank/faster) from Bonn or Koblenz to Bingen.

The usual stretch is from Koblenz southwards to Bingen. From Aachen,
drive the autobahn A44-A4-A61 to Koblenz, about 150km. Note there are
major roadworks on the A4. The West bank road B9 gives you views of a
number of castles on the other bank, but bypasses a number of small
towns. It's worth visiting these as well.
You might be interested in this link:

which is a list of all the castles and ruins in Germany. Look for the
listings in Hessen and Rhineland-Pfalz for Rhine valley listings.
There's some other websites specifically about the Rhine valley. Just
Google "Rhine castles". This one hasa nice overview:

And the B42 (right bank - east side) is more scenic.

There are castles on both. I remember traveling up the east bank, trying
to tell my students on the bus about castles we saw, and there were
quite a few visible to confuse them! I had to tell them which ones they
had taken pictures of after we got home 8-)
