It looks terrific. It might seem a bit soppy, but I'd probably prefer
more options than vegetarian that night, much as I like vegetarian food.
I'll bookmark it for the future though- thanks.

Why are the so many more McDs than BKs?

I wonder if a transatlantic perspective is relevant? I have not
carried a check book for years and I pay most regular if
variable bills like credit cards on the internet. I do carry
cash but pay most non-trivial bills with a credit card and I do
not choose to have a debit card tho' I have authorized direct
payment of some constant monthly payments. I do find myself
writing two or three checks a month, mainly for things like
charitable purposes and magazine subscriptions.

The chip (at least in the UK) is harder to clone than the magnetic
strip. (One reason why should always hide your pin while entering it in
an ATM.) However, fraudsters will just turn to other means.

its always worth trying the Ivy for an early table, you never
know. The Globe is nice but I dont think they do evenings until
the plays start, we always fall back on the Archduke, but its on
the south bank, which might not suit you. Not fancy, just
pleasant, under the railway line, hence name. The Cinnamon Club
does fancy curry in a converted library just near parliament,
elegent, better than the Red Fort or Veeraswamys IMHO Then there
is Benares, but hes been on telly, so probably packed out. Rasa
Samudra in Charlotte street does fish based curry. How about
Sketch? I havent been but it would be interesting. Theres a place
that does great Argentinian steaks in Regent Street, cant think
of the name? Tom Aitkin has a pub over in Chlesea thats supposed
to be good or for retro Lolas in Charlotte Street before its too
late! How about The Wolsely, where a lot of the Ivy people
decamped to, including Sean the doorman? I'm not sure what kind
of thing they do, its supposed to be european cafe style,
whatever that is. Then theres the Oxo place or Tower 42. Paul
Gayler is at the Lanesborough Hotel, hes very good and it gets
good ratings, but thats all I know. *Quaglinos* has a good
atmosphere, a great space and isnt usually totally packed,
definatly worth a try, especially if you want to do a big
entrance down those stairs :-).
Fifth floor Harvey Nicks' - do they do evenings?
Cafe Royal? grand stuffy over priced formal, but an occasion.

I cant think of any sensible reason (other than the home offices
inability to specify computer systems) why we are not the same. I
think the insurance info is already in place.

Are you thinking of the Gaucho Grill, which is off Regent Street?

Thanks for all that! There's a Harvey Nicks and Gaucho Grill in
Manchester, and I took my partner to the latter a few years ago. (It's
his birthday, and we're in London that day.) I'm tempted to try
Quaglinos.

IIRC The Ivy is smoking throughout, though, which is an issue for David.

Another current favourite is Chutney Mary, on the King's Road - a quite
formal and very elegant Indian resto. Superb food - more nouvelle than
curry-house influences!

Yes- good point.

These are all terrific suggestions. I'll report back on what we
eventually decided upon! In London, we do pretty well just following our
nose, but I appreciate the suggestions this time around.

Reading the Quaglino's menu, I read "when smoking, please be considerate
to your neighbours." This would indicate they don't have separate
sections- damn.

The vast majority of French checks are endorsable for deposit only;
they cannot be directly converted to cash.
