Default Car Rental Suggestions in Nice France

Would appreciate any suggestions on a car rental in Nice for 2 weeks.
I have quotes from Budget and Avis for a few cars but I'm not sure of
their relative size and how they compare to US models. I am traveling
with my wife and 9 month old daughter who will be in a car seat. We
are bringing enough things for the baby that I'm thinking a trunk may
be appropriate. Also for safety reasons, I would like to stay away
from the very small economy cars that we've rented in the past. The
cars that I've been quoted are as follows. I would appreicate any
comments on how the Opel's and Renault's size up. I usually rent from
Avis, however, the pricing from Budget seems more attractive. Any
comments on Budget and Avis operations in France would be appreciated.

Budget

Opel Astra - $410
Opel Vectra - $514

Avis

Renault Megane- $475
Renault Laguna - $575

I've driven Lagunas, they're about equivalent to a Toyota Camry. Large
enough for 3 and luggage easily. However it took me almost a week to figure
out how to work the radio! You can check out the cars on the makers
websites also.

As an Aussie, I've rented cars in both Europe and USA/Canada. My experience
generally is that a compact car, as listed by the major rental companies in
the USA is a bit larger than its European equivalent, but the space inside
is not as efficiently arranged. I'd agree you should stay away from the
little micro cars in the cheapest category, as they are very cramped and you
often have very little room in the boot(trunk). Also they don't ride all
that well, and don't offer as much protection if you're involved in an
accident.

The Opel Astra is something like a Toyota Corolla in size, the Vectra (which
I hired last year in the UK) is more like a Camry.
I'd say the Megane is midway between a Corolla and Camry. I don't know the
Laguna, but Mark has told you that it is similar to a Camry.

Hope that helps

Have you checked with AutoEurope? - www.autoeurope.com or 1-888-223-5555 in
the U.S.
They are a broker that arranges rentals with many major rental companies at
very competitive rates. We've done many rentals with them over the years
and have never been dissatisfied. On one occasion when we returned to the
US to find an unexpected additional charge on our credit card bill, it was
refunded immediately by AE. On another we had a disagreement with the
counter agent when returning a car. We called AE right there using the
toll-free number they provide and all was settled in our favor.
