Default Car rental Reservation

It have been ages since I have rented a car so I'm a bit rusty on the
reservation process.

I have made a reservation through an online travel site for a Hertz car.
I have received a confirmation number even though I was never asked to
give a credit card number. The site specifically said no credit card was
required.

Then I went on the Hertz site. They quote the same car class for a
higher price. When I try to reserve that one Hertz requires a credit card!

What do you think?

Why do you want to reserve the same car at a higher rate?

I don't. I just wanted to confirm Hertz would not require a CC. But they
did, which brought about my doubts.

They will take your credit card details when you collect your car. I'm not
sure what your concern is - you have a confirmation, surely?

Although, as Jerry Seinfeld knows only too well, some people "know how to
take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and
that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding.
Anybody can just take them." :-)

That's really my concern, will they hold the res. I'm particularly
concerned as the travel portal (thingy) I used had a price which was
*much* lower.

Do you think I will get my car as outlined in my res. with this lower
price?

As I said, I don't usually rent cars, but this time it will be essential
to do so. I just don't want to get stuck at the last minute paying
extortionary prices! ;)

They either want a credit card or a very large sum deposited in cash.

By the time you have paid all the hidden extras, the final bill will
be about twice the rate they quoted on Internet.

Did you try the Hertz website in the country where you are renting?
Look at Avis too, Avis worked out cheaper in Oz.

nitram makes a good point. be sure that all of the fees and taxes are
included. Many US sites find it convenient to omit VAT in their quotes even
though VAT is a part of the price, it is not a sales tax. Then there are
airport and other charges as well as some required insurance.

The best provider that I know for Europe is Autoeurope, they never play
games with their fares and will match legitimate bids from others.

Do you have a toll-free phone number for Hertz where you live? If so, just
call them, give them the confirmation number the travel portal gave you, and
confirm with Hertz that you have a reservation and that the details of
price, taxes, etc. are what you are expecting.

That particular portal probably gives them so much business that they have a
special reduced rate, some of which saving the portal passes on to its
customers, like you. I really wouldn't worry, but as GG says, it may be a
good idea to call Hertz and check that you have a car.

I rent cars on a regular basis here in the UK and in Europe and the USA. You
don't say in which country you are renting, but you will almost certainly be
offered additional insurance etc etc, so it's up to you what you want to do.
In the US, the desk-clerks are on commission if they get you to upgrade,
take additional cover and so on - AFAIK, that is not the case in Europe, and
it certainly isn't in the UK.

But that's for when you take the car.
I presume emilia is worried about them not having anything which
'confirms' the reservation and thus that the reservation might just
get 'lost'.

I tried lots of different companies, even called & emailed local
agencies. One agency keeps sending me cheaper offers everything I tell
them I don't need the res. anymore... I'm waiting to see if they can get
as low as my current offer!

So far the travel portal had the cheapest base rate. I looked mostly at
the base rate as I assumed the taxes & charges are the same. Even with
taxes and airport charges they are the lowest. But I'm concerned that
with no CC confirmation I will end up with a differnt base fare.

The travel portal I used had the cheapest offer.

That would be too easy! I'll try that tomorrow!

Just tried AutoEurope. They are more expensive. Do you think it is worth
it to send them my quote from Hertz?
