Hi , I will be moving to Holland in the next month for about 2-3 years
and was wondering what the best way to get a car was. I think i have a
number of options
1 - Get a car in the Uk and import it to Holland
2. Get a car in Europe which is RIGHT hand drive and then IMPORT back
in the UK and then take it to holland.
3. get a car in holland which is left hand drive and sell it once i
have finished working...
If anyone has done this please let me know
and was wondering what the best way to get a car was.

By the way, note that if you can show you have owned the car for six
months you can import it with out paying the 45% BMP car tax.

You seem not to give a great deal of weight to the matter of driving
in Holland. It would be easier and safer if you had a left-hand drive
car.

With all the bikes on the roads, there are some advantages in having a
right hand drive. I get along OK with a LHD when I visit UK, other
than overtaking. It's rarely safe to overtake on a normal road here
and as most travel over the speed limit there's not a lot of need for
overtaking.
See the link I posted that goes into the problems of an expat owning
a car in Holland.

If you take a car to another European country for more than 6 months
you need to locally register it (I guess the Martin's link says this).
To do this it needs to pass the local tests. This will require all the
lights
that are wrong being corrected. You won't see much change out of 2000
Euro for this and you will then have to pay to put them back again to take
it back to the UK (unless you want to suffer the value drop of a RHD car
in a LHD country)
This is not a viable solution fopr someone who doesn't already own a car.
Why do you want to own a car anyway. The Netherlands is one of
the most Public Transport friendly countries in Europe (the population
density helps a lot).

From what I have heard cars in the UK are rather expensive, compared to
other European countries.

You won't get right-hand-driven cars in Europe outside the UK!

Thet's by far the best and easiest solution. You won't have to deal with
the import-export-stuff as well.

You used to be able to order them tax free from the factory. Not all
RHD are made in UK. May be you still can.

You just have to pay 45% car tax +19%VAT. It's fairly painless to
import a second hand car. If you have owned it for six months there is
no tax to pay.
