They're supposed to replace them with something.

The owner of the luggage. It's his punishment for failing to bow and
scrape before the new American police state.

They can't inspect without breaking the locks.

US travelers have long been advised to buy TSA approved locks that can be
opened with special keys supposedly only the TSA people have. This is not a
new problem and everyone should know about it by now.

Yes they can. Just buy a TSA-approved lock. They are only about $7.

My principal concern is the possible (inevitable?) damage caused to the
camera by manhandling.

Yes, but most of us have until now been carrying such
vlaubles as cameras in our hand luggage to avoid tempting
the TSA people!

TSA people and thieves. Of course, sometimes these are the _same_
people.

And thereby turn over your valuable to TSA-approved thieves.

I'll have to consider that but the extra mileage doesn't appeal. I must
check out the restrictions, if any, in the various Paris airports.

They're a joke. Any thief worth his salt can snip one off in two
seconds. And a good lock would only "red-flag" the suitcase so it
could be sliced open with a razor.

SFAIK, their sole practical purpose is to prevent a case
popping open in transit, scattering my lingerie all over the
tarmac!
