Default budget european travel?

I am looking to go to Europe in May or July. I want to know how to find the
best deals. Should I go to a travel agent? The details are below.

Number of people - 2
Length of stay - approx 1 week
Destination - ireland, spain, england, italy, greece? anywhere.
Leaving from - Cincinnati, Chicago, New York, Boston (just about anywhere
east of the Mississippi)

Total cost - around $500pp including airfare and lodging

Is this doable? As you can see, I am very flexible.

At that price I think March (possibly April) would be your last chance until
late October or November.

US$500 for a week including airfare? Perhaps I am reading it wrong, but that
would barely even pay for a flight at that time of the year! If you want
your money to go a long way, check out the non-Euro parts of Europe, like
Hungary, Czech (not Prague) or Romania (my personal favourite!).

Avoid London at all costs.

Are you seriously thinking of doing all this in one week? With one week,
any more than one country would be madness. Or are you asking us to pick
a country for you to visit? Since we don't know anything about you, this
would be rather difficult.

This is virtually impossible. In May or July, the airfare alone will
likely cost this much. For two people in a cheap double room without
bath, you will have to figure about $40-60 a night minimum, more in
England. In a hostel, figure $25 per person per night. So that would be
about $200 per person MINIMUM for lodging.

Flexible, maybe, but not very realistic.

in belgium we can get budget -deals between 350-700 dollar for 1 week
for greece, spain etc...(flight ht half board)
you should contact a good travelagent...
since airtravel is cheep between ny and europe it must be possible to
do a bargain :-)

Have you tried http://www.skyauction.com. There have been some hotel/air
packages to Europe that have gone for those prices, for travel before Easter.
