Bruges Parking Info Needed
Can anyone help with some information about parking in Bruges? Is it
safe? I heard parking at the train station is less expensive and
easier to get to than in the downtown area. Is this true? We have a
brand new car...are parking spaces very big? Underground or covered?
Thanks much!

I would be surprised if they even let non-residents' cars into the
central area at all.
Most of the parking at the station is for bicycles (thousands of them,
it's the biggest bike park I've ever seen).
Why not leave your car somewhere else (preferably in a scrapyard in
a different continent) and get around like the Bruges locals do?

Thanks Jack...I think I'll follow your advice. Can you recommend a
good scrapyard? Scotland maybe?
Thanks for your insight.

Certainly parking is a bit thin on the ground but it is more safe than most
towns. I go every year before I catch the boat home from Zeebrugge and I
stay in the same little hotel, The Adornes. http://www.adornes.be/
It has free parking in an underground secure garage which you can reserve
when you book. They give you the code when you check in. I suppose only
people who have stayed there previously can steal your car. They also do a
nice breakfast as well.
The larger chain hotels have parking spaces but it tends to be a free for
all as to who gets one. You could ask the hotel you are staying at if they
do it.
Hope that helps.

You're taking a car into Brugge because ... ?
There used to be "secret" free street parking in central Brugge if you
knew where to look, but that was before the new regulations put paid to
all that. There's a big garage on the west side of the city center,
or perhaps you could book at a hotel with parking and just leave the
car there.
Or you could avoid taking a car into Brugge entirely.

Re: Bruges Parking Info Needed
Thanks, and it looks like a great hotel! I already made a reservation
though, and too late to change. I asked and they don't have parking,
and recommend the parking garage at the train station, then a free bus
into town by showing my parking receipt.
I'm driving there because a train would take twice as long because of
the connections, and driving is much cheaper anyway.
It sounds like you must like it there, to go every year. I am sure we
will to, and will try to stay at the Adornes next time. Thanks for
your help!

I stay overnight before catching the ferry home, to Edinburgh, to save any
excitement if I get stuck in traffic and am running late. I stop sometimes
in Ghent or Antwerp depending on which direction I am coming from which are
both pleasant places to spend a night or two. Brugge is my favourite but
beware that it is a very popular tourist destination and it is quite small.
Don't be tempted to have a meal in the Markt, the big square with the huge
bell tower, because the restaurants are all tourist traps and the food is
not very good. It will repay you many fold to wander off a couple of streets
away where you can find lots of fine places to eat and drink. I have found
most of the people in Flanders to be quite helpful. This is probably because
they use up all their spare aggression by abusing the Walloons, the French
speaking half of the country J
I hope you have a nice time.

I have visited Brugge twice now. Parking at the train station is very
easy and it is right near the central area of the city. If you have a
TomTom GPS device, you will find several parking garages in the city.
I found an indoor parking garage right in the heart of the old part of
the city. Keep in mind that most parking spaces are very narrow and
short. I drive a Ford Explorer and I have a difficult time in most of
these European parking garages. The train station has both covered
and uncovered parking. You can't miss the train station. You'll see
thousands of bicycles in front of it. The parking garage is just to
the left of those bicycles. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron. I found Parking Centrum on my GPS, and I hope this is it.
In any case, I'll watch for the bicycles and hope for a covered
parking place. Thanks for your advice!

Re: Bruges Parking Info Needed
Yes, we live 5 hours away, and even after parking, it will be less
than 50 Euros for a 3 day trip. Plus, the train takes at least 2
hours more each way.

Re: Bruges Parking Info Needed
I agree that Brugge is a very nice place. I had no trouble at all and
it seemed like everyone speaks English here. It is a popular tourist
destination. I am an American living in the southern area of Beglium
where they speak French. They don't like to speak English down here.
I like Brugge and you will too I am sure. The parking was not
expenisve. We paid maybe 6 euro for parking but it was worth it.
