Suburb say pigs aren't welcome
Lake Forest votes to ban farm animals
By Susan Kuczka
Chicago Tribune staff reporters
August 8, 2006
"Lake Forest aldermen tentatively approved a ban on the ownership of farm
animals, including pot-bellied pigs, in residential areas Monday night,
giving owners a year to find new homes for their pets.
The action came in the wake of a neighborhood petition drive seeking removal
of Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs on a Sheridan Road estate. The ban, which
would take effect September 2007, still needs formal approval at the
council's meeting in September.
Before the 5-3 vote, the owner of the three pet pigs urged Lake Forest
officials to allow her to keep the animals.
"I want to know, why now? Where is the clear and present danger?" Estelle
Walgreen asked aldermen during a City Council meeting to discuss the city's
animal-control ordinance.
Shortly after Walgreen moved to the 2.3-acre, $3.3 million estate in May,
more than 300 residents of the North Shore suburb signed a petition seeking
removal of Walgreen's pigs--Jacqueline, Piggy and gRunge. Walgreen moved to
the estate after divorcing her husband, an heir to the Walgreens drugstore
chain.
Neighbors Kathleen and Robert Murphy filed suit against Walgreen in June,
contending that the city's animal-control ordinance bars pigs and other farm
animals from residing on lots that are less than 10 acres. Walgreen had
lived on a 10-acre lot in Lake Forest.
After her neighbors complained to the city, Walgreen sent letters in support
of the pigs to aldermen. Walgreen, the mother of two young children, told
officials that the pigs are beloved members of her family who have never
caused a problem for neighbors.
But last week, neighbors called police when one of the animals wandered into
the Murphys' back yard, knocking over patio furniture and trampling the
garden before officers got the animal back to the Walgreen property,
Kathleen Murphy said.
Police Chief W. Michael Hosking said Walgreen was given a ticket for
allowing her pig to roam without supervision, a violation of the
animal-control ordinance.
Aldermen considered several amendments to the ordinance at Monday night's
meeting, hoping to forge a workable compromise.
One option would be to exempt pot-bellied pigs that are a maximum of 250
pounds or 30 inches tall from the 10-acre restriction.
Another would be to exempt the Walgreen pigs from enforcement of the
ordinance as long as they do not pose a danger or public nuisance.
Walgreen's relationship with pigs began more than a decade ago when her
husband gave her a 50-pound piglet she named Jacqueline.
After the divorce, Walgreen brought the pigs to her new property, where she
converted a two-car garage into a barn so the pigs had someplace to sleep.
Problems arose after the Murphys heard a continuous "belching" sound coming
from their new neighbor's back yard. They immediately complained to police,
who declined to issue a ticket, saying the animal-control ordinance was
vague when it came to regulating pet pigs.
Last month, aldermen ordered up a study of the ordinance, along with those
of nearby communities to determine how pot-bellied pigs normally are
regulated.
Most communities on the North Shore do not allow pigs, horses, sheep and
other common farm animals in residential sections, according to a survey
city officials conducted.
In an effort to mend fences with the Murphys, Walgreen recently had a
7-foot-high screen placed between the back yards of the neighboring homes.
Kathleen Murphy said the barrier won't solve the problem she has with the
pigs.
"They smell, and the sounds are still there, and these animals like to
forage so they can just go dig under the fence," she said.
"The pigs should go."

I liked the Ibis, which you can book from the Accor hotel web site:
http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/index.html
I think Ibis are 2*, but I've stayed in several 3* hotels that were worse
than the average Ibis. The Novotel is a bit upmarket if you prefer that.

I've been stopping off in Brugge for one night, before I catch the ferry
home from Zeebrugge, for several years and I always stop at the 'Adornes'.
It is about a 10 min walk from the centre but is fairly quiet and relatively
tourist free. They also do a good breakfast. There are some good pubs
nearby which stay open most of the night. It is not a budget hotel but you
only get what you pay for. They do a free underground car park and free
bikes as well.

We stayed in the Adornes in our trip to Brugge as well, and would
definitely stay there again. It is a bit more expensive than some
alternatives, but the free bikes saved us 24 euro and the breakfast was
one of the better ones we've had. Bikes are a great way to get around
Brugge.
