Britons are rated the world's rudest tourists

Quite often we see here lengthy threads about loud/brash/horrible American tourists.
It seems not everthing is as they would have us believe. I will copy a portion of a
news item on http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/thi...p?story=316274
titled "Britons are rated the world's rudest tourists"
"A global survey of tourism officers has found that the inhabitants of the UK are the
nightmare of hoteliers, souvenir sellers and ice cream vendors from Ibiza to Bangkok.
Were the universal loathing of 17 of the most popular holiday destinations not bad
enough, it seems the best regarded travellers are those traditional rivals for the
poolside loungers, the Germans. "The poll, by the travel company Expedia, ranked each
nation on criteria ranging from respect for hosts to tipping, and general behaviour
to ability to speak a foreign language. Britons came lowest in all but one of the
criteria, scoring a total of minus 44, some 38 points fewer the next worst behaved,
the Irish and Israelis, and 83 behind the Germans. "The Americans were ranked as the
most polite, while the Germans made the most effort to use their hosts' language, and
the Italians were most willing to try local delicacies. Britons, along with Russians
and Spaniards, were found to be the most likely to talk loudly in their own language
to try to make themselves understood."
Maybe we can now get back to TRAVEL!

You are about the fourth person to make this point, perhaps if it gets laboured any more it will get really boring instead of just quite boring.
The locations surveyed were locations that were found to be popular with british tourists, si it was hardly fair.
Of course, by far the rudest of British travellers abroad were shipped there in the criminal ships.

Personally, I'm still enjoying it. But I know what you mean--all these stereotypical
comparisons don't serve much purpose except to make people angry.

Sorry People. I didn't realise that someone had already posted about this. For some
reason my news server did not show up the others. My posting was an attempt to show
exactly what Ptarmigan wrote. I have no problems with any nationality and have often
wondered why people were always having a go at the Americans so I thought some
oposite news was worth mentioning. Why on earth I gort zapped by that other fellow I
don't know and quite frankly he needen't try to explain either. Once again for the
normal people here: SORRY. Gerrit

This thread amused me highly, and brought to mind an experience in an outdoor cafe in
Madrid last year. Six or seven REALLY BIG guys were sitting at a table next to us,
swearing and being generally rowdy and hitting on two young ladies at a third table.
After they left, the waiter inquired, Americanos? No, we and the young ladies told
him indignantly. Brits! (They were rugby players).
This isn't to damn Brits or rugby, but frankly, I think that Americans are not
particularly obnoxious. I imagine that in the old days, when only the wealthy could
travel to Europe, condescension was more common.
"European Vacation" -- Who is worse, Sparky or the waiter in Paris?

An unfortunate characteristic of a certain type of young Englishman is the inability
to enjoy himself without getting shitfaced and obnoxious.
