British school holidays

When do the kids in Britain start their summer holidays? I'm planning a
visit to London and would like to know whether the touristry places are
full of school groups or is this noticeable at all? Also is there any
difference in the size of the crowds during the different summer months?
Nothing against school kids, I'm bringing a couple of those with me :-)
, just would like to avoid the biggest rush times.

Well, in July/August London will be crammed with overseas tourists anyway!
You need to avoid high summer!

Unlike the USA we dont tend to see school groups at tourist
locations during the summer holiday. There aill however be
large numbers of families with kids.

Yes they are much smaller outside the July/August peak , especially mid week

I'd recommend early September, say the week beginning the 10th, the weather
is still usually quite pleasant and the kids are back in school.
You may also be able to get a better accomodation deal.

The holidays run from mid-July to the 2nd week in September (the "6 weeks
holiday")
You will not see any school groups during this time, as quite simply the
schools aren't in! You will likely encounter parents out with their children
however. And the likes of me going out because it's a nice weekend!
If you don't want to encounter school groups then avoid the start of July,
many schools have organised trips away a week or two before the start of the
summer holidays.
If you want to avoid kids completely the best time is probably June, however
the weather isn't so certain at that time of year (if it ever is!)

Different dates in England and Scotland.

No, except for swimming pools and skateparks - your problem is that
inter-city transport is all booked up at the start and end of school
holidays.

OK thanks. That's what I was thinking about. Here in Finland we have
just that, the last school weeks are filled with trips to the major sights.
Guess we'll settle for June anyway.

It's not just British school groups you need to watch out for. We get many
French, Dutch and German groups all through the year, and the behaviour of
some of them leaves much to be desired, with very little control exercised
by their accompanying teachers. June is a popular month for European youth
groups.

Like the groups of British schoolkids you get on the ski slopes here. I
think it's a school outing thing. I suppose I was the same on school
exchange trips.

My, I'm surprised that happens in any big way nowadays. School teachers
here are quite paranoid (and unfortunately, they've been given good
cause to be) about school trips because of various risks- I'm surprised
they'd get the insurance for ski trips!

It's the same here in France too, end of June in this area but it varies.
> Guess we'll settle for June anyway.
You might find that the French schoolchildren are in London if not the
British :-) Not in great numbers though, don't worry. Enjoy your trip.
