Default Border delays-Croatia, Hungary

I am driving from Venice to western Hungary, via Zagreb. What kind of border
delays can I expect going into Croatia from Italy, and then into Hungary?

You can travel by ferry from Italy to Croatia but otherwise you've to go
through Slovenia to reach Croatia. Today's border controls
Slovenia-Croatia are to my experience easy and I would guess there aren't
much of delays. Same for Italy-Slovenia . Slovenia being an EU member but
outside Schengen so you've to show a passport. No experience of
Hungary-Croatia but I would guess it's a light control. All assuming
you're carrying a western passport, EU-U.S-Canada or so. Other passports
may face more trouble as usual.....

I did once encounter a delay going from Italy into Slovenia by bus.
The vehicle ahead of us was a scruffy old man driving a donkey cart
with a camel tied behind it. It took them about ten minutes to let
him through. At a guess, his passport was issued by King Zog of
Albania and his camel wasn't quite roadworthy .

Between Croatia and Hungary you could miss the border if you blink.

You will, most probably, have no problems on Italy-Slovenia border (Slovenia
is in EU). Also, there are usually no problems or any delays on
Slovenia-Croatia or Croatia-Hungary borders. Delays are only during tourist
season in Croatia.

I recently went Slovenia-Croatia-Slovenia-Italy by bus, and it was
pretty hassle free- minor queues.

you might avoid traffic and border crossing if you travel

Vencie tarvisio klagenfurt graz HEILIGENKREUZ Hungary

If you do not need to go throughZagreb. this is the fastest way. ( and
cheapest. no need to pay for Slovenian and Croatian toll roads )
another way would be to cross the border to Slovenia at
Gorizia Nova Goriza. and take the slovenian toll road from there

I am puzzled -- why HEILIGENKREUZ? It seems far out of the way. Why not
north from Graz on the A2 to about Weiener Neustadt, east past Eisenstadt
and Windem am See on the B50, over to the A4, and down M1 to Hungary?
Would it be cheaper total? Michelin ( I know you don't aprove)
stimates -- Via Zagreb: 10 hours 39 minutes, tolls 10.59, petrol 8582, road
tax 9.85 for a total of 106.26. Via Graz: 10 hours 32 minutes, tolls 10.80,
petrol 94.51, road tax 17.45, for a total of 122.86

well. this is the road I prefer. It might seem out of the way
but

there is no border between Austria and Italy
toll road in Austria with a sticker (valid I think at least 7 days )
all the way from italy to Austria is toll road ( exception.. when you get
out of the Austrian Autobahn and go to the border.)

The border is not that busy.. then you will travel on a normal road in
Hungary with little traffic. until you reach the highway from balaton to
Budapest. ( this is free )

if you take the other way.. you will have the border between Italy and
Slovenia
Between Slovenia and Croatia.. and if I remember well the border crossing
is Varazdin.. in the middle of nowhere. then again normal road until you
reach the highway from balaton to Budapest.

I do not know what VIAMICHELIN says.
but via Heiligenkreuz it proved to be the best of the ways
I guess you can reach Budapest in about 8 hours.
( with an average speed of 120KM/hour)

maybe the cost of gas will be cheaper in Slovenia Croatia and Hungary.. but
it depends on where you tank.
I would rather say Austria is the cheapest place to buy gasoline.

The only problem I had was going the other way, when the Croatian
customs officer gave me a friendly wave through, and 5 metres further
the Slovenian guard screamed at me to stop.

No wonder as few countries worries about exits but a little more for
immigration.

In Communism everything was different. One example was die Deutsche
Demokratische Republic and the Wall[s] of Berlin.

1) Very few countries pay much attention to departures.

2) The EU is very concerned with peripheral border controls. Even
prior to 2004 Slovenia was trying to make a good impression on the
politicians.

He has nothing to do with border crossing Varazdin if he is going via
Zagreb.

Most probably, he is taking border crossing Bregana. Then he has highway
Zagreb-GoriÚan. Highway is all the way.

If he is taking Venice - Trieste, then he is crossing border at Pasjak or
Rupa. In that case he has highway Rijeka-Zagreb-GoriÚan. Here he has about
20 kilometers of normal road to Rijeka and then highway is all the way.
