Can someone give me the cheap rates on trains/buses for these routes?
We are flying into Bologna Forli from Frankfurt-Hahn then we want to
hit the coast. I noticed Bologna is 60km from Bologna and 30 Km from
Ravenna.
What is a train fare or bus fare from the Hotel to Ravenna and then a
train to Rome form there? We are going to be there on the 7t-13th and
want to do 1-2 days on the coast and 3 nights 4 days in Rome. (spend
afternoon/night on the coast and par to f the morning, then take the
train to Rome..
I saw rates of about 30-35 euro each way from Bologna to Rome.. But my
Let's Go 2002 says a train from Bologna to Rome is 18 euro. I know it
has not doubled.. is this a different train? I did see Eurostar does
it in about 2 hours or so and another train took almost 3 and a half..
Any help on this would be great.
Bus fees, etc..

Just going to Trenitalia's website will give you the most accurate fares:
http://www.fs-on-line.com/
But do be aware that the price for the train will depend on the train you
choose. Trains labeled R, IR, or D will be the cheapsest; trains (or
connections including trains) labeled IC or EC will be more expensive by a
good chunk, and ES trains will cost even more, by a big stretch. You really
have to to the website and try each one out to get the fare. Then, when you
are in Italy and go to the counter to buy your ticket, you have to specify
which train or train type you will be taking when you buy your ticket, so
that you pay the appropriate rate.
It's a bit of work, but for my anticipated train trips in Italy I go to
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
and copy a list of all the services running for roughly the time of day I
plan to travel. If there are three or four cheap-type trains, then I figure
to simply buy the cheap ticket and choose which one of those trains to take.
If an IC or EC train really makes a big difference for time or convenience,
then I'll plan on buying one of those tickets and taking one of those. For
ES trains, you need to specify exactly which train you'll take and make a
reservation.
For Ravenna transit, chances are all you can get anyway are the cheap
trains--some of which only have 2nd class. The cost of the tickets for
Forli/Ravenna/Bologna will be peanuts. For the Bologna-Rome portion you
will almost certainly want an ES train.

Does that sentence make sense to you?
The airport is BLQ, Bologna. Forli is a smallish town 70km to the
SE., and 30km from Ravenna, which is NE of Forli. I think Forli was
the birthplace of Musolinni, and a lot of the buildings were built in
his era. It is pretty much the center of the Emilia Romagna quality
wine growing area. These wines are of very high quality, and
excellent value. They are readily available in Bologna at Enotecia
Marasala.
I stayed in Forli 10 years ago, and tourist amenities(restaurants)
were few and far between. Unless you have some reason to stay in
Forli, stay in Bologna.

The OP means he is flying into Forli airport (FRL). Ryanair, to name
one airline, markets Forli as a Bologna airport.

You can easily find train fares for Italy on www.trenitalia.it. If you
choose the English language (by choosing the UK flag) option, you will
find everything in English and you can enter the English names of the
cities rather than the Italian names.
The fares vary by type of train, with the Eurostar trains being the most
expensive and the IR or R (interregional or regional) being the
cheapest. Once you choose a train, you will see the prices (in 1st and
2nd class). (Sometimes you will have to click on fare, at the bottom
right and proceed as if you were reserving a ticket in order to see the
price.)

I see 2nd class fares of 28 euro for IC (intercity) and 37 for ES
(Eurostar) trains. I see one very slow train each day at 4 something PM
that costs 22 Euro. The web site gives you all the information you need,
including journey times.
