Best way to get from Berlin to Hamburg?

I see that the ICE is available. Looks kind of neat and fairly fast,
but it is expensive. Is there a cheaper way? How long would a bus
take? Would it save a lot of $$?
Thanks,

Rent a car and drive. The drive is 3-4 hrs and you can pick up a small car
fairly cheap. When you factor in the down time taking a train or bus, it's
pretty much a wash. I did it last September.

In the weekend Sa and Su you can travel inexpensive with the Happy
Weekendticket valid for local trains (IC,ICE excluded) in a full day
Euro 32 for 1-5 persons.
But you can also navigate on the DB site and find out the various bargains
for advance reservations. Those tickets are typically much reduced but
non-flexible (as low price airtickets)

Going on a Saturday or Sunday, and have lots of time? Get a Schoenes-
Wochenende-Ticket for 33 EUR (I think) and take local (RB/RE/IRE)
trains. Takes about twice as long as the ICE and you have to change a
couple of times, but it is as interesting a trip as it is cheap.
Up to 5 people can travel on that ticket, which makes it even cheaper
per person!

A car wash?
I really can't see a hired car being either cheaper or faster than
train in Germany, city centre to city centre (assuming that is your
journey), especially if it's one way.

it really depends on whether you are going alone or not, how long you
book in advance, how flexible you are, how enduring... whether you are
going one way or both ways...
A few alternatives:
- BerlinLinienBus regular bus servce
- some special train fares (e.g. Schöner Wochenend, using only local
trains, i.e. RE and RB).

It's actually not for me, but, it would be a SUNDAY, it would be ONE
WAY from Berlin to Hamburg and it would be for 2 travellers.
Flexibility is as follows - aim is to make it there by early afternoon
and not spend TOO much time travelling. 3 hours may be doable, but 5-6
definitely isn't. If the difference is between 2 hours via ICE and 3
hours via bus and the bus is much much cheaper, then I think that will
win out. 3 hours or less, cheapest way to go. But if the ICE is close
to the bus price, then probably train. Did I read correctly, some
trains take 5 hours? No way if that is the case.

Sounds like "The schönes wochenendeticket" is the most inexpensive way for
you. 32 Euros for up to 5 persons. Local trains only , for a timetable
search try
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
in "means of transport" try "Without ICE/IC/EC " and you're provided a
timetable with regional and local trains.

Berlin Hbf (tief)
Hamburg Hbf Su, 01.04.07
Su, 01.04.07 dep
arr 13:18

I suppose the decision will be between the above train for 100 EUR (50
EUR for each traveller) @ 2 hours or
32 EUR for the schönes wochenendeticket (16 EUR for each traveller) @
4 hours. Is 2 hours savings worth 68 EUR more??? That is the
question! Thanks all.

You can get from Berlin to Hamburg in an IC or EC train in less than 2
hours for 29 EUR p.p. with this offer:
http://www.bahn.de/p/view/preise/aktionspreis/hh-berlin-spezial.shtml
(You have to chose a particular train and to buy the ticket at least
three days in advance. It is a return ticket, but cheaper than a
single trip.)

I checked out that offer. It seemed like the way to go. UNFORTUNATELY,
the travel will be for April and the offer is only good until the end
of March. Oh well. Thanks though, that really sounded like the way to
go.
