Best time for Switzerland

My wife and I are planning to come to Switzerland and Austria for
around three weeks. We can come any time from July through to October.
I've checked the weather reports and they seem to indicate that
conditions vary a lot depending on exactly where you are. But, is
there a best time overall? What do frequent visitors to Switzerland /
Austria recommend? I prefer warmer weather with less rain. Any
thoughts? Thanks!

I think July and August are too warm, and suggest September as an
ideal time for a 3-week visit. But all things relative.

Where exactly you want to go? Also in the mountains, or do you stay in the
cities?
In the Alps you can already have snow in October! Or you can have 20
degrees. Hard to tell beforehand, I did experience everything from 20
degrees and sunshine to half a meter of snow and fog in October (in theo
mountains though).

Than I would choose August or September. I don't think it is too hot,
unless you stay in the big cities or in the southern part of Switzerland
(Ticino). In the Alps it's never really that hot due to the height, you
maybe have 25 degrees, but seldom more.
The rain is hard to predict, though. Especially in the mountains you can
sometimes expect thunderstorms on warm days, but usually they are in the
evenings and over after an hour or two.
Maybe you can be there over the first of August, which is the Swiss
national holiday. Lots of fireworks, bonfires on the mountains, foodstalls
in the streets, some towns have parades..quite nice.

Frank

Pot luck in my experience.
We first went to Switzerland on our honeymoon at end of May 1972 in Davos.
Travel agent had told us the weather should be nice so we didn't take many
warm clothes. The day we arrived it was snowing quite heavily and as our
transfer coach ascended towards Davos, to our horror, we could see the
people in the streets wearing overcoats and mufflers. When we got to hotel,
there was quite a heavy layer of snow.
When we woke up the next morning (no smark remarks please! ) the snow was
nearly all gone and the weather was beautiful for the rest of our holiday -
we have photos of us wearing short sleeves and playing in the snow at the
top of one of the nearby mountains
Went to Austria (Seefeld) for a week one August and it rained 5 days out of
7.
Spent a night and a day in Interlaken one Easter en route by car to Germany
and the weather in Interlaken itself was lovely, really warm but still lots
of snow on the mountains.

September usually has a more stable weather pattern. I would even
recommend October, as in the past years I had plenty of wonderful hikes
in autumn. In July and August a hot and sunny day can turn into a
thunderstorm in the afternoon.
And if you want to maximize your chance of having dry weather, pick the
Valais region in Switzerland. It has the highest mountains and a
microclimate that makes it dryer and sunnier.
Have a nice trip!

G'day, Philippe! Thanks for your advice. I particularly appreciate
your opinion as, being a 'local', you should know. On the basis of
your comments my preference is tending toward the first week or so in
August. But, let's wait and see what other comments are forthcoming.
Cheers!

Switzerland's weather is very affected by the mountains, you really do
have to take a chance . The area Geneva to Brig does generally get
more sun , which is why its the wine growing area on the south
slopes .
We've had two weeks of Sunshine in September and also been there
during the floods in August .If its hot then you can get heat haze,
so the views are not as good. What you can be assured of is they have
weather, there is no such thing as bad weather , just different.
August is peak time so is generally busier and harder to find
accommodation.

Weather in Switzerland is heavily influenced by the
Alps, basically SE is dryer, S is warmer than NW,
in addition, sheltered valleys get less rain (whereas
mountain ranges exposed NW get more).
July and August can be hot (30 to 35 degre Celsius),
October already cold - September is the month
I prefer. Temperatures are lower at higher altitude,
snowfall in regions above 2000 meter can occur
all year, but snow will not last on roads or most
hiking trails in Summer.
You might get an idea "browsing" for example
web-cam archive for last year at
http://bergbahnen.zermatt.ch/e/web-c...att4.html?0608
or more scientific data regarding Switzerland
http://www.meteoschweiz.ch/web/en/cl...velopment.html
I would choose September and try to get some
flexibility for adjusting to weather conditions.
Most SE-valley in the Alps seldom get precipitations
for more than a few days in a row. So best
probably is a base in in the Southern part
of the Alps (for Switzerland Engadine Valley or
Valais; for Austria/Italy Tyrol) with good connections
(public transportation or by car) for day-trips
to interesting sites N/NW of the Alps main
mountain range.
