Default Best of Stockholm, Sweden -- Your Opinion?

What besides the obvious things must a visitor to Stockholm, Sweden, not miss?

Best restaurant? Best café? Best excursion? Best boat trip? Best... best of all.

I'd especially love other ideas than the obvious.

Thank you.

Most obvious is possibly the Vasa museum.
Beside that I would recommend the city hall with it's special architecture,
the Drottningholm area with the Royal castle,Chinese castle and the Royal
theatre oldest theatre with the original macinery in the world. A special
favourite: "Countess Hallwyls palace " is a gem among museums.
Excursions : by bike perhaps if you can manage : alongside the lakeshores
of lake Mälaren to southwest down to Vårby, return by roadferry over
Ekerö,Drottningholm.
Or Northeast alongside the seashore Stocksund,Djursholm,Näsby,Hägernäs,
continue to Vaxholm and return by boat.

Best boat trip? Best... best of all.
A: S/S Norrskär (sa,su) or M/S Cinderella to Sandhamn, cross the island
and you're likely to find a beach where you're more or less alone for a
picknick.
Alternative is the channel route by Strömma
B: With "S/S Mariefred" from City hall to Mariefred visit the castle and
narrow gauge railway
C: From City hall to Uppsala (not every day) with stops at Sigtuna and
Skokloster castle, return by railway.
D: "the quarter to five" 16:45 evening cruise with S/S Storskär to
Ljusterö and back again.
E: A special favourite the Fridays only long trip with S/S Blidösund from
Royal castle to Norrtälje. Dep 16:45 arr 23:25 return by bus

Whatever else you do, make sure you visit the Vasa museum.

Oddly enough, the Modern Art Museum. YMMV. Oh, and I don't know if you like
organ music or not but if you happen to be able to catch a recital at the
Hedvig Elenora (sp?) Church, it has the most amazing acoustics. And the army
museum has a nice collection. The Vasa was just big and black. Almost
impossible to get a good picture of it.

As for Sweden in general: Kalmar, the whole city and the Orrefors Glass
Factory a short trip west of Kalmar.

A number of government museums including Modern art and National museum are
free of charge from this year. It's just to drop in.

I like the high speed ferries to local islands instead of painfully
slow and earnest tourist steamers - more interesting people and speeds
up the pleasant but frankly flat and hypermellow landscape views. I
like the clifftop views from (?, the south, sodermalm?, well... the
only place with nearby cliffs). Looking from Old Town, go to the
cliffwalk to the right instead of the more often recommended left. The
views from the left are obscured if the tree leaves are out.

For food, I like the spiced up world food cafeteria at the Ethnology
museum. Probably lunch only, but really well done foods, drinks, and
even some atmosphere. In a cluster of outlying, not overly exciting
museums. Visit the farmer market areas; I prefer a lesser known indoor
one to the east.

There are 75 museums in greater Stockholm, and some will cover a niche
that grabs you personally - gotta research and not go by advice only.
Oh, the Vasa is an absolute must, but go at an odd time to avoid the
busloads. Nearby is the imposing Nordic museum which doesn't have very
universal appeal compared to famous Skansen on the other side.

An unexpected gem is the Army museum which has little english signage,
so be hearby clued in that you are supposed to bypass the quaint cannon
displays on ground floor to the top floors first. There you are
dazzled by dioramas and anamatronics of their military superpower days
which puts following exhibits in perspective.

I like some of the remote dead-artist studios for their art and more
importantly the little slice of heaven they made out of a waterfront
villa with gardens. Besides the famous Millesgarden, there is one
beyond Skansen by some rich count who just missed being king. I am
going by sketchy memory on all this so details may vary. There are
some great and not so great historical museums of viking and medieval
days... let's see, which is which?

Lars,

Apart van the Vasamuseet, I personally liked the following:
A good, inexpensive, buffet lunch (SKR 65) with a beautiful view over the
historical center of Stockholm (Ganla Stan) and the surrounding waters with
their ships from high up on Sodermalm, the island to the south of Gamla
Stan.
place: Hermans Tradgardscafe
address: Fjallgatan 23a.
(dinner for about 50% more is also possible i understand)

Hope this helps!

Ward
