I live in NJ, and in June/July, I have friends in Berlin who I would
like to visit and since Im there...I have always wanted to visit
Krakow...and since Im there well why not on to Budapest, and then the
Black sea.
1. Any advice on best way to travel in Eastern Europe...Im thinking
rail? I am concerned about cost and problems with auto rental.
2. Any thoughts regarding which Airline, NY to Berlin and later return
from "near" the Black sea area to JFK? maybe called an "Open Jaw"
3. Best beaches for Black Sea?
Feel free to E mail me if you wish.

I would recommend to fly easyjet (www.easyjet.com) from berlin to Krakow.
It is a cheap line, and will cost you a few dollars if booked now.
Rent a car in krakow if you want to see the neighbourhood (recommended),
should not cost you the fortune for a couple of days.
then check the rail from Krakow to Budapest
(http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en)
or some international buses (I think every local travel office can help )
if you want some more info email on mikejonatan-at-yahoo.com

Rail travel throughout the region is easy, reliable, and inexpensive. A
first class, return ticket from Budapest to Brasov in central Romania cost
me EUR 50.00 in 2001.
TAROM operates non-stop flights from Bucharest to JFK. There are also
summer flights from Constanta right on the Black Sea coast to many cities in
Western Europe, where you should be able to get a quick connection back to
JFK.

Sounds interesting...unusre if flying works as well as rail travel..as
there is a certain enjoyent in seeing the countryside, and a more
relaxed atmosphere with rail as opposed to taxi to the airport and
waiting.. problems

Train should be OK.
There are direct overnight trains Berlin -> Krakow and Krakow -> Budapest.
In summer there is a direct train connection (couchette cars) from Budapest to
Varna (Bulgaria, Black Sea):
Budapest 8:35 - Varna 10:18 (nect day). Departure from Budapest on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Saturdays from June till September.
Also Burgas can be reached without changing trains:
Budapest 8:35 - Burgas 12:55 (next day) - from Budapest on Fridays and Sundays
in summer.
There is also a once-weekly Krakow - Varna couchette-car:
Krakow 22:30 - Varna 10:18 (2 nights), leaving Krakow on Fridays from June 24.
