I'm contemplating taking a day trip from Berlin into Poland soon and
was wondering if anyone out there has stumbled on an especially
interesting village, town, place in Poland near the German border. Is
there still a passport/customs situation taking place at the bridge
near Frankfurt an der Oder? If so, how does this effect the train
traveler? thanks

You can reach Szczecin (Stettin) in two hour from Berlin making it a
comfortable daytrip.
For schedules try http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
Customs/passport control is convenient onboard the train if you're traveling
that way.
As it's ,for the moment, an outer border to the Schengen you may expect
close passport control both on exit and entry but it's usually no problem
and done within the rail timetable schedule.
