The World Service is not funded by the license fee though. It's funded
by the Foreign Office.

I don't see the connection.

I think Wolfgang thought that you implied that German culture is
inferior to British.

Oh, I didn't mean that. I might argue that TV in one country is better
than another, but that's a different thing- and in any case, I would
need to know a lot more about German TV to make that comparison. I'll
happily compare US and UK tv and media because of the time spent in both
places.

It wouldn't all be negative. At least where I lived in the US, the
public radio channels were excellent, and public TV was watchable,
probably because of all the BBC/WGBH co-productions and reruns of older
Britcoms! Oddly, it became unwatchable when they did their fundraisers,
and basically played crap like reruns of Charlotte Church or Bocelli. I
never figured it out- I assume it _must_ have made them money, but I
just switched off during pledge weeks. Some of the public affairs
programmes on the networks were pretty good. I only had basic cable in
order to get a decent reception- that's what a lot of people have to do
IME. Of course, there's plenty of rubbish, including US rubbish, on UK
TV to choose from! :)
