Barcelona Hotels -- Avenida Palace vs. Condes de Barcelona
My wife and I will be in Barcelona next week for three days/two nights
and have found that these two hotels -- Avenida Palace and Condes de
Barcelona -- are roughly equal in terms of cost. We were interested
in hearing about any insights or experiences that people may have had
with either as we attempt to decide which one to stay in. Thanks in
advance.

I have not stayed in either, but my borrowed Star Guide (which upscale
travel agents pay $465/year to subscribe to & I totally trust their
reviews) gives both 3 stars, but sounds like it favors the Condes,
which it says lacks panache, but the efficient staff & great location
more than compensate. The public rooms are very nice & it has a pool
& whirlpool, but 'the aging guest rooms show wear.' Request a room
with balcony for it's 'lively view.' Request a 'Centre' room for
better lay-out & well lit work space, if yu need it. Staff speaks
English well. Vaguely Art Nouveau styling. Two bars, breakfast room
& 'sharp contemporary brasserie with terrace.'
The Avenida they feel is overpriced for what you get. Good location,
but the 'Old World ambience looks like it was designed in a hurry.'
Lobby is filled with cheap appointments for sale & restaurant is poor.
there is no pool. caters mainly to groups.
Hope this helps.

Re: Barcelona Hotels -- What about Hotel Turin?
Hi Brenda,
I wonder what your Star Guide book says about "Hotel Turin" in Barcelona the
the La Rambla area, more specifically on Fortuny St. I was just about to
book this hotel but it never hurts to get one more opinion
Thanks in advance,
Cornelio

Decent middle class hotel, best location of Barcelona, price still quite reasonable, the Hotel
Turin has been my favourite for many years and still is.
Highly recommened. If you want to know more about it, send me an E-mail.
Wish you a pleasant time in Barcelona,
Richard

Stayed in Condes de Barcelona a few months ago, and er... I probably
wouldn't again. It's not worth the money. The hotel is pleasant enough, but
the rooms are nothing special _at_ _all_, and are tatty compared to the
superb, but not much more expenisve Majestic (just across the road - with
rooftop swimming pool with a view down the ramblas).....
hwyl!

I'm sorry - it does not review the Turin (usually only does 3 star or
better hotels, so I'd be a little concerned as it's not in here. Their
last Barcelona update that I have was Winter, 2001, so if it's opened
since then, that could be the reason.
It gives a glowing review to the Majestic, so if that's not too much
more $$$, I'd take someone else's advice & stay there! It especially
praises their hotel "Drolma' restaurant. We're staying at the Claris
in May & I'm almost tempted to change...

Any notes on the Catalonia Princesa? This is supposedly a new 3-star
hotel, but I'm a little uncertain about it. I found a great deal on
the United Vacations website, but either it almost seems a little
seedy from the outset, or I should just renew my subscription to
"Modern Skeptic." I like the location - close to Parc de la
Cituadella, which should be nice.
Thanks for any info,

Princesa Catalonia
Yes location of Princesa Catalonia is nice, on a very local little shoppingstreet. The hotel is brand new, they renovated the whole building and openend a few months ago.
The hotels looks a little out of place in this street, because it is so new and it looks quite upscale whilke the street has more working class ambience.
I always do my shoppings and my first coffee of the day in this street ; )
