I know that Barcelona is worth visiting for the tourist attractions but
can anyone tell which sites I absolutely must not miss and where the
best entertainment can be found in the evenings?

Barcelona's #1 highlight for most people is the work of the architect
Gaudi. The Sagrada Familia is considered his masterwork. You also
can't miss the Picasso Museum, which focuses on that artist's earlier
work, especially his "blue" and "rose" periods, and Las Ramblas (a
beautiful street with many street performers and sidewalk cafes, but
watch your wallet).
Personally, I also really enjoyed some of the other Gaudi buildings
like the Palau Guell and La Pedreda, and would also recommend that you
check out the fantasy structures of the Parc Guell for the most extreme
example of his style. The Barri Gotic is the old quarter of the city,
and while it is increasingly touristy, it is worth a visit.
I didn't have time to visit the Historical Museum, but it is supposed
to contain some ruins from Roman Barcelona, and I have heard very good
things about it.

I think the Gaudi bulidings are the dont miss thing. I like
walking around in the Rambla area, looking for good tapas, not
being a clubber

although I dont put Barcelona in my top three spanish cities.

Casa Batllo was my favourite building by Gaudi (after Sagrada Familia
of course).
If you like football then visit the Barcelona Stadium and tour (I
believe its actually the #1 tourist attraction in Barcelona).
The cable car from the beach to the hill is worth a ride to see great
views.
And if you like art, the Miro museum is also great (on the hill).
The singing fountain is also worth seeing.
If there are big queues for Sagrada Familia, don't worry about getting
to the top. It was the only dissopointing thing I thought after waiting
for 2 hours to get there.
One other note. I thought the tourist buses were quick, clean and not
badly priced. I enjoyed using this method of getting around the city
for one of my days there.

As others have said, the architecture is fabulous. The museums mentioned are
all worth a visit but one not mentioned that we liked was the maritime
museum just east of the Columbus monument. We were just looking for a
diversion and were pleasantly surprised by how nicely it was presented.

The Picasso Museum has some of his early work...realistic pen and ink
sketches...not what you think of when Picasso comes to mind.
The roof of the Pedrera was an experience...talk about vertigo!
