The Routard guide suited us well for Andalucia in '93. For Barcelona the
following year, I just researched online- that's where I got all the
info. Get online, man! :)

On the train line from Barcelona there are two separate train stations
you can get off at for Monserrat.

There is a cable car running direct from the first train station up to
Monserrat, and there is a funicular railway that runs up to Monserrat
from the second station.

When we went we got off at the first station, went up on the cable
car, and then came back down on the funicular, then back to BCN from
that station.

There's a really good motel restaurant in Figures, I would stay
there if you like fine dining

Of course not, but there are wonders there do be found without a car.

I find that generally, the best things are after I have parked.

Went ahead and booked it. Viator lists several trips by local travel
cos. and they combine a lot of 1-day excursions, such as Girona and
Costa Brava trail or Sitges and Tarragona.

Chose this one because it's like half the price of the others for an
all-day tour (which I may come to regret).

Doesn't include "rack railway and cable car at Montserrat." But not
sure there will be time as I believe they're allotting only 3 or 4 hours
before moving on.

We'll see how it goes.

Frommers, Rough Guides, etc. all have put a lot of content online.
There are a lot of forums now too which didn't exist even 5 years ago.

However, I don't mind spending $10-15 from Amazon. Guide books has the
info. that you can carry around as well as good maps.

Plus, someone has to keep those grad art and other humanities students
employed. :D

Don't book any more excursions til you get to Barcelona !!!
Sitges & Tarragona ( south of Barcelona) and Girona ( North ) are very
easily accesible by train.

If you have more than 2 hours at Montserrat, you have plenty of time to go
on the cable car, whatever your guide tells you!!! Go directly to the Cable
car on arrival, explain to the ticket man that you need to stay on board for
the return trip- if you get off there can be queues for the return trip up.
the mountain.

That's true, though online info is getting better than it used to be. We
did our entire holiday last summer (Krakow, Budapest, Vienna and
Bratislava) with print outs from the internet, and it served us well.

It's up to you what you do, of course, but it's so easy to get to
Montserrat by train that it seems a shame to me to confine youself to a
tour schedule. The cable car and funiculars are part of the fun- don't
short change yourself on that if you can avoid it!
