Doanu Kanal is not the river Donau..

I found the official site of Donaukanal

the Donaukanal is a branch of the river Danube.. ( therefore not properly a
channel.. )
it is about 17 kms long
separates from the main river in Doebling and joins the river Danube again
in Simmering
it creates an island of 2 of the 23 districts in Vienna.
The river of Vienna is the Wien River that flows into the Donaukanal.

It has been tried many times to rename the Donaukanal.. not to evoke the
impression of an open air sewer..
the name of Kleine Donau was introduced. but unsuccessfully.

Even so, I don't think it's that interesting a place- but the hotel was
very cheap and clean, and it was easy to take the subway into the
centre!

The river Donau, as well as Donau Kanal is very much inside the city limits
of Vienna

The U-Bahn is new out there. When I lived in Vienna it was only being
planned. I agree it's not too wonderful a place - yet - but I think that
will change gradually. If they keep up the effort. Otherwise it might
degenerate into another Kaisermühlen (near the UNO centre).

And even if there are some manmade sections on the river, it doesn't mean
that they wouldn't be of the same system. Every time we see dredging going
on on the river Thames we should wonder whether it is actually taking place
there or not.

The Donau Kanal loops towards the centre from Floridsdorf, but the river
makes a straight line just to the north-east and runs through Vienna, the
Handelskai runs alongside it. At the MOST they're about 4km apart.

Have you ever been on the Donauinsel? Took the U-Bahn over to the UNO
buildings? *That* is the Danube.

I think you underestimate the size or the boundaries of Vienna.

What do you mean by degenerate into another Kaisermuhlen (near the UNO
centre).?

Admittedly UNO City itself is just a concrete jungle, but right next door
there's Donau Park, Turm & Insel with all sorts of attractions for locals
and tourists alike. Then just down the Wagramerstrasse there's an excellent
shopping mall (Donauzentrum) with some really good fast food places, plus
lots of restaurants and a multiplex cinema nearby. And as for Kaisermuhlen,
that has just about the best outdoor swimming complex (Gansehaufel) in
Vienna on the Alte Donau, not to mention one of the best ice-cream parlours
in town.

None of these places are where people actually live though. Kaisermühlen is
generally regarded as the "East Enders" end of Vienna. Have you ever seen
"Kaisermühlen blues" on telly?

Sorry, haven't watched TV these past 15 years. But I've just done a Google
and had a look at http://www.kaisermuehlenblues.com/
I spent a couple of years working in UNO City back in the early 80's and
have been back to Vienna many times since, which is why I know the area
quite well.
